Charlie Becker had just lost to Ohio State.
Nine catches, 165 yards, the best game of his season, and it was not enough.
So he walked across the field to find their head coach and say sorry for something he did last year.
Here is the whole thing.
Start with his father. Dave Becker played linebacker at Ohio State.
Charlie was born in Cincinnati. The family moved to Nashville when he was in kindergarten, but the house never changed.
"We had Ohio State posters up. You name it, we had it."
"We were die-hard."
He wanted to play there. That was the whole dream.
Ohio State never offered him.
He was a three star kid at Father Ryan High School in Nashville who also won state titles in the hurdles. Indiana brought him in on a visit, and hours after it ended he told his dad he was done looking.
"That's it. I'm done. This is it. This is where I want to play."
Now go to last December.
Indiana played Ohio State for the Big Ten Championship. Becker led Indiana with six catches for 126 yards. A 33 yard catch of his late in the game kept Ohio State off the field until there were 18 seconds left.
Indiana won 13 to 10. First Big Ten title for that school in almost sixty years.
Then they went and won the national championship.
And on the stage, in the middle of all of it, he took the O-H-I-O chant and changed the last two letters into something vulgar.
It went everywhere.
Now yesterday. Ohio State came to Bloomington.
Becker was the best player on the field. Nine catches, 165 yards. Indiana lost anyway, 19 to 15.
And after it, with the season he thought he was going to have cracked open, he went and found Ryan Day.
A television camera caught it.
"I'm really sorry about that. That's not me. I'm saying I'm sorry to you."
Then Day went to his press conference and said this about him.
"Charlie Becker just played out of his mind today."
Now the honest part. It took him ten months, and the apology came on a day he lost rather than a day he won, and plenty of people will tell you that is the only reason it happened.
Maybe. He is the one who has to know.
But there is no version of this where it was easy. He could have let it sit. Nobody was asking him for it.
He had just lost at home to the one team he grew up wanting to play for, in front of his own crowd, and he walked over there in full view of a camera and put his name on it.
Nobody apologizes well in that minute.
That is the worst possible minute to do it.
He did it then anyway.

"Alright, well, the sun comes up tomorrow"
Points out the critical moment in the game was Indiana offense stalling late in the 2nd quarter in the red zone, then missing the FG, and Ohio State scoring before half

We lost, we lost in a heartbreaking way, and I feel fine? Like I’m just gonna go on with my weekend?
Is this what winning a natty does?

5 years ago, a 13 year old girl came to our home with a flyer for babysitting.
She was going door to door. She made a logo that said "Babysitting Service". She had her CPR and child care certifications with her to demonstrate she could handle it.
Said she was saving up to buy a car...she didn't come from money. Her mother is blind, and she is often relied upon to care for her family. She does a lot of the cooking, as I understand it.
So, we gave her a shot. First time she babysat for us, she showed up early. Her brother dropped her off, which I thought was nice. I found out later that he made her give him one hour of her wage for being her ride.
When we found out, we decided to pay her $20/hour to make up for it. She was good with the boys.
She babysat my first born son from age 2 until today. She was there when my second son was born.
It has been 5 years now and she has probably babysat for us 50 times. Maybe more.
We started giving her Christmas bonuses a few years ago. Couple hundred bucks. She cried.
Last year, she bought her very own car. A used Buick.
(I helped her get a PPI done, as she was about to buy a clunker off of Facebook Marketplace.)
Now she's working two jobs - one at a restaurant and, of course, babysitting. While her friends are out partying, she's working to save up for college.
She's right on track. She plans to be a nurse...and she is saving enough money to avoid college debt.
Every time I get a little discouraged about the state of the world, I think of her and my mood lightens.

Twenty-two in a row. One program has been there before, one hasn't. Indiana won at Nebraska the way it won at Iowa and Penn State last year. Fell behind, stayed poised, made huge plays.

Man, this was good. Really good. Great job, Berman and ESPN. I was never a Bears fan. But this just reminds of a time when Ditka symbolized football and masculinity. the 1980s were amazing.

An unbelievable BADASSES from Jim Nantz on MIKE DITKA who he noticed only carried $100 bills on him during the time they did TV together. Ditka would pay for everything with the hundred and let them keep the change. Listen why. An all-time story from Nantz on Da Coach.
