I like sports so I built @SpotSportsApp

While at ESPN, I struggled when we announced ESPN Bet. Betting features were already in the app and now the brand was going all in with a sports book. I'm glad it failed, and it's also one of the reasons why I started Spot.
Every broadcast has odds now. Every app pushes a parlay. Spot doesn't. We tell you what's on and where to watch it. Worth reading why one longtime ESPN producer walked away: cjr.org/the-interview/nicole…

Visibility isn’t reform. But you can’t choose what you can’t see. @caitmosc’s story captures the trap. Spot Sports Youth is one practical start: a free NYC directory to compare programs by age, location, schedule, price & registration status. spotsports.com/youth
‘Travel sports,’ a term that has come to encompass all sorts of private teams, leagues, and clubs, used to be for the truly exceptional young athlete. Now, they’re for anyone willing to pay — an expensive, exhausting commitment that has become popular not necessarily because millions of parents want them for their children but because it can feel like there’s no other choice. Rec programs are underfunded and struggle to compete with for-profit leagues for prime field, rink, and court times. And the level of play is diluted, often very early, as travel teams are incentivized to enroll children at young ages. Around 5 million children in the U.S. now compete on travel teams. Parents find themselves trapped. They know the benefits of sports and want that for their children, yet giving it to them often means buying into a sports ecosystem that’s inherently flawed. As the pay-to-play model increasingly takes hold, so does the idea that kids should start competing at younger and younger ages, risking their sense of self along with their shoulders and ACLs. “I never want my kids to look back and say I didn’t do everything I could to help them live their dreams,” a mother of three soccer players said. She’s hired professional photographers to take action shots for her 12- and 13-year-olds’ Instagram accounts — the platform has become a recruiting tool — and they’ve both asked her to pay for personal trainers. “I think the word isn’t ‘specialize’; you are ‘professionalizing’ your kid early. You are exposing them to everything professionals have to deal with — I’m talking injury, time, schedule, everything,” said John Van Benschoten, a former MLB player and travel-baseball coach. It makes one ask: All this for what? And for whom? Read Caitlin Moscatello’s cover story on how travel leagues have made youth sports more expensive, hypercompetitive, and all-consuming — and the investors who are making a killing: nymag.visitlink.me/1-gbZQ

Starting in NYC. If you’re a parent, coach or local provider, try it and tell us what’s missing or outdated. The goal isn’t to rank kids or sell registrations. It’s to make the local options easier to understand. Outside NYC? Tell us where we should go next.

Growing up, finding sports radio was easy. In New York 660 AM, you got WFAN. One number, burned into memory for life. Podcast discovery never got that simple. YouTube's algorithm came closest, so creators went video-first and never looked back. Great for finding shows. Less great when you just want audio on your commute and YouTube makes you pay for background play. Today we're launching Video Podcasts on @SpotSportsApp. For eligible shows: watch or listen, switch between the two whenever you want, and pick up right where you left off. Don't want to watch the whole episode? Check out the clips. Download Spot Sports on the App Store to try it.

First launch of the week. World Cup Player Passports. Easily follow your favorite players as they start league play in a few weeks. Also figure out what services you need and how much they cost using our Watch Cost calculator spotsports.com/watch-cost/ca…
🚀Day 1 The World Cup gave us new players to care about. Following them shouldn't mean decoding clubs, leagues, channels and streaming apps. Player Passports show where they play next. Watch Plan shows what it takes and what it costs to keep watching. spotsports.com/watch/soccer

I spent a year building @SpotSportsApp and never knew when to stop building and start sharing. So: launch week. Starting Monday one launch a day, each fixing something that makes following sports harder than it should be. The World Cup ends Sunday. Sports never stops.

Three years ago I got laid off from ESPN. Now I'm running a YouTube channel: profitable, 175K views a video, closing in on 60K subs. Goal: 100K by end of summer. If you believe sports journalism can be more — with no gambling ads — I'd love to take this journey together ⬇️
