40 years ago today on 9/27/86, with Georgia leading South Carolina by five and running out the clock, QB James Jackson does what Vince Dooley calls “the most interesting thing” he’s ever seen. Fortunately, it’s six years before defenses can advance such fumbles. UGA wins, 31-26.

60 years ago today, Georgia faces VMI in Roanoke’s Harvest Bowl—an annual regular-season charity game. After his fumble leads to a VMI TD, Kent Lawrence returns the ensuing kickoff 87 yards to tie it. UGA ultimately wins 43-7 in its last road game vs. a non-major-college foe.

20 years ago today, Georgia trails four-TD underdog Colorado 13-0 before freshman No. 3 QB Joe Cox comes off the bench to throw two 4Q TD passes, including the game-winner to Martrez Milner on 3rd down with seconds left. In UGA's 14-13 win, Cox goes 10 of 13 for 154 yds, 2 TDs.

Georgia-Oklahoma week: Sooners legend Bud Wilkinson with Vince Dooley just before the Bulldogs upset Alabama in Athens in 1965. Three months later, Wilkinson would recommend the second-year Georgia coach for Oklahoma's head coaching vacancy.

41 years ago today, Georgia trails Clemson 13-10 in the 4Q when senior center Peter Anderson alertly jumps on a teammate’s fumble in the end zone for the go-ahead TD. UGA goes on to win 20-13. It’s the 3rd of what remain just 5 “rushing” TDs by a UGA o-lineman in the modern era.

18 years ago today, on Sept. 20, 2008, Georgia makes its longest regular-season trip from Athens since 1960. Knowshon Moreno gets the scoring started at Arizona State with a soaring 9-yard TD run. Moreno finishes with 149 yards on 23 carries and 2 TDs in the Bulldogs’ 27-10 win.

34 years ago in October 1992, Georgia and Arkansas meet for the first time in Fayetteville, in the Razorbacks’ first SEC game there. UGA leads 3-0 in the 2Q before a Garrison Hearst TD run, then adds an Eric Zeier-to-Shannon Mitchell TD pass in the 3Q en route to a 27-3 win.

83 years ago today, a day after UGA voted to play as 8 of 12 SEC teams suspended their seasons, mostly 17-year-olds upset favored Presbyterian 25-7. Johnny Cook had arguably UGA’s most versatile game, including a would-be SEC-record 4 INTs—omitted despite official stats on file.

37 years ago today in 1989, 34-year-old Ray Goff opens his head coaching tenure with one of UGA's youngest teams in program history. 18 true freshmen play in the 15-3 win over Baylor, including George Brewer, whose key 3rd-down sack helps turn a 6-3 game late in the first half.

UGA finally gets its first win over Arkansas in the 1987 Liberty Bowl. Tied 17-17 with under a minute, little-used CB Carver Russaw—not even in the bowl guide—picks off a tipped pass. Freshman John Kasay, kicking for a suspended starter, wins it. UGA is now 12-4 vs. Arkansas.

40 years ago today, Georgia opens the 1986 season vs. Duke by throwing out of the shotgun on the very first play. After Vince Dooley spends the summer promising it, the run-heavy Bulldogs deliver: James Jackson throws for 193 yards and a TD, adds 54 rushing, as UGA wins, 31-7.

21 years ago today, No. 9 Georgia — a 17½-point favorite — holds off South Carolina, 17-15, in Steve Spurrier’s first SEC game with the Gamecocks. Charles Johnson’s huge third-down sack helps force a four-and-out on Carolina’s final possession. UGA would go on to win the SEC.

20 years ago, in the only previous Georgia-WKU meeting, true freshman Matthew Stafford makes his Bulldog debut in a 48-12 win. He gains 19 yards on his lone run and completes his final 3 passes, including his first career TD—a 13-yarder to Coleman Watson, Watson’s only UGA catch.

Georgia is 1-1 on Labor Day, its lone win in 1982 vs. Clemson—a 13-7 victory with the latest home kickoff in program history (9:15 p.m.) and Sanford Stadium’s first game under permanent lights. Down 7-0, Dale Carver blocked a punt that Stan Dooley recovered for the decisive TD.
