Egyptian authorities just arrested and imprisoned an entire newsroom last month. Now they are summoning the incredible journalist Lina Attalah, editor-in-chief and co-founder of Egypt's most important independent news outlet Mada Masr, for questioning yet again.
Lina Attalah, Mada Masr’s editor-in-chief, received a summons today from the Supreme State Security Prosecution to attend a questioning session on Wednesday, October 21. The summons did not say why she is being questioned.
The new investigation, Case 9072/2026, is the sixth case brought against Mada Masr, its journalists and its editor-in-chief in the past six years. The most recent was in August 2025, when the security prosecution released Attalah on LE30,000 bail. She was questioned at the time on charges of “broadcasting false news” and “using a website without a license,” based on a National Security Agency investigation report, in relation to a Mada Masr story on prisoners’ complaints of abuse in detention facilities. When asked why she trusted the sources cited in the story, Attalah said she had abided by professional journalistic standards and had acted in the public interest. She also pointed to the legally protected right to inform authorities of events through publication, noting that the outlet presents a full range of viewpoints.

Not a single arrest has been made of any Israeli involved in attacks on Washington Post photojournalist or European diplomats over the weekend in the West Bank.

The facts are reported clearly and dispassionately here by Azam Ahmed, who witnessed the attack. nytimes.com/2026/10/16/world…
The Prime Minister’s Office:
The facts surrounding the confrontation near Abu Falah, during which Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine was allegedly assaulted, remain unclear and are under investigation.
Israel unequivocally condemns violence against anyone—Jews, Arabs, Christians or journalists. Those responsible will be held accountable.
But serious questions remain. Reports indicate some 200 Arabs and far-left activists confronted approximately 40 Israeli youths. Footage shows masked individuals on both sides hurling objects, amid reports of fireworks fired at Jewish youths. Other footage appears to show Levine knocked down and immediately helped to her feet by the same unidentified individual.
The investigation must establish the facts, including who initiated the violence.
We will not allow disputed incidents to be exploited to demonize the hundreds of thousands of law-abiding Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria.
The facts must determine the conclusions. Not the headlines.

To be clear: Some facts are neither in dispute nor unclear. Our photographer was clearly marked as Press. She was clearly beaten. These are not partisan or risible statements, but indisputable. We urge a thorough investigation and accountability.

Journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed in May 2021 and though her death was the most investigated of any Palestinian in history, no one was held accountable. That impunity led to the killing of nearly 300 journalists in Gaza and settler attacks like the one today.

What’s amazing about all the warnings from Israel and US intel that a return to striking in Iran is inevitable because it is rebuilding its power, acting on nuclear program and restoring its ballistic missile launchers is that it shows just how much last two wars failed.

Several Palestinians in northern Gaza told CNN they witnessed the Israeli military demolishing mosques, homes and buildings or clearing rubble near the shifting yellow line – blocking Palestinians from accessing land where their loved ones could be buried under the rubble. Human rights actors, including @EuroMedHR and @volker_turk, warn the clearance of rubble in areas under Israeli military control could erase evidence of war crimes.
Under international humanitarian law, the parties to an armed conflict “have an obligation to conduct search and recovery work” for the remains of those killed, missing or injured, and to collect, preserve and transfer that information to the other side, Pat Griffiths, of the @ICRC, told CNN.
Twelve months after the US-led ceasefire deal was signed, Palestinians say they are trying to survive a forever war - one legacy of which is everywhere, yet unseen - in the 8,000 people reported missing, most of whom are likely buried beneath what the United Nations estimates to be 61 million tonnes of rubble.
And with each day that passes, the chances of identifying the dead grow slimmer as “crucial evidence” is lost, said Griffiths.
“Where are the bones of our loved ones?” asked one resident, Yahya Odeh. “Where are their bodies? There are entire families beyond the yellow line who have been separated from their relatives.”
Here's our full report. Read testimonies from Palestinians and see our satellite imagery analysis showing how Israeli forces have shifted the yellow line to push deeper into Gaza. With Tareq El-Hilou, Mohammad Al-Sawalhi, @AbeerSalmanCNN, @StockwellBilly, @faridaelsebai and @ThomasBordeaux7 ✍️🏽
