The Amiga 500 didn't go away quietly, despite increased pressure from PCs and the console market in 1992 (the year it was discontinued). An absolute showcase for its still remaining popularity and power was Flashback (1992), designed by Paul Cuisset for Delphine Software. To me, the Holy Trinity of platformers on the Amiga will forever be Prince of Persia, Another World, and Flashback. Set in the year 2142, you play as Conrad B. Hart, waking up with amnesia in a jungle on Titan (one of Saturn’s moons) after crashing while escaping pursuers. You find a holocube message recorded for yourself, saying to meet your friend Ian in the city of New Washington. As the story unfolds, you learn that you're an agent who discovered a conspiracy by shape-shifting aliens called Morphs.

People don't understand Nikola Tesla's insane IQ. Tesla literally read all 100 volumes of Voltaire's works as a teenager. Tesla was accused by his teachers of cheating on Calculus tests because he solved the problems in his head. Tesla claimed to have never built an invention in reality that he didn't already design in his head. Tesla could recite Goethe's Faust almost entirely from memory. Tesla worked 18 hours a day in Edison's lab. Edison even said "I have had many assistants, but you take the cake." He often worked from 10:30am to 5am. You are very much not operating at Tesla's level. When you study the greats of history you really realize the true level of genius that these people operate at.

My neighbor's car got totaled in a hit-and-run last week, so he went to use his insurance payout of $11,000 to buy a clean, 10-year-old Honda Civic. Every single lot he visited told him the exact same thing: they don't sell cars under $15,000 for cash anymore. One sales rep pulled him aside and admitted: "Our corporate managers lock all budget cars in the back unless you agree to place a $2,000 down payment and sign a 72-month loan." When my neighbor pointed out that financing an 11-year-old car for 6 years means paying $18,000 total for an $11,000 vehicle, the rep just shrugged. They don't want working people buying reliable transportation outright. They want everyone locked into an inescapable monthly bill on cars that will break down before the loan even ends.

The original Star Wars trilogy built entire worlds with matte paintings, using paint, glass, and forced perspective long before digital effects took over. It still looks incredible today.

Orion rises behind the Naturalist Shack at Assateague Island National Seashore. We had exactly one hour before clouds rolled in. It was a very frigid night and I was freezing, but I'm very stubborn and persistent. I love the reflections of the pilings and I'll so proud of this nightscape - only my second one ever 🙂 Do you think I did a decent job? Asked consistently what my take away actually was. There are three 1. People can love you and still forget about you once you fade away in the context in which they learned to love you 2. It is likely at time of death your phones photo album will be filled with people who don’t even know you’ve died 3. The odds are family will be the 95% of what matters at the very end. 10 years after your death, the odds are that the people still grieving you daily are family
Most eye opening lesson from my mother’s death. She had a vibrant friends group and social life, one couple she even equated as non biological son and daughter. After her stroke, during her year of hospital care, all these people faded away. Became too busy. Stopped visiting her. Since her funeral we haven’t seen or heard from any of them

I think her friends loved her, but maybe not as much as she thought they did. Or maybe they had different definitions of “love” - family is family at the end of the day, no matter how much we think people will be there, we may be surprised at the end when they just, aren’t

Life only moves in one direction, and that is forward. There are places I would return to if I could. People I would sit beside again. Days I would live one more time, knowing now how quickly they would disappear. But there is no road back. Memory can visit the past, but the body cannot. Maybe part of growing older is finally understanding that we were never supposed to hold on to any of it. We were supposed to be there completely while it was happening, then let it become part of us when it was time to move on. There is sadness in that, but there is also wisdom. If there is no going back, then there is no reason to spend today trying to resurrect yesterday. Take what was good with you. Learn from what hurt you. Grieve what was lost. But keep walking. The life in front of you will never look exactly like the life behind you, and maybe it isn’t supposed to. The lesson of impermanence isn’t that nothing matters because everything passes. It’s that everything matters precisely because it passes. Be here for it while it is here.
