“After more than a year in this pandemic, I’m pleased to report that the only side effect I’m feeling thus far is joy.”
Craig Melvin is a MSNBC/NBC Today anchor and Dateline host who holds a Bachelor of Arts in Government from Wofford College (2001) and nothing else - no medical degree, no scientific training, no epidemiology, no public health credentials of any kind. His entire career is television journalism.
In April 2021 he received his first COVID vaccine dose live on the Today Show with colleagues, then immediately used the national platform to declare the sole side effect “joy,” point viewers to a state-by-state guide, flash a QR code, and urge everyone whose “turn” it was to get the shot. He also spotlighted his hometown pastors converting their church into a vaccination site inoculating hundreds a day, while his MSNBC program repeatedly framed the crisis as a “pandemic of the unvaccinated,” covered employer and institutional deadlines as successful tools for sharply raising vaccination rates, and hosted segments treating refusal as the core obstacle.
A pure TV personality with zero relevant expertise turned his massive daily platform into a compliance machine, modeling the shot, shaming the holdouts by implication, and normalizing pressure as civic duty. The promised “joy” and clean return to normal were soon followed by breakthroughs, endless boosters, shifting goalposts, and the human cost of firings, exclusions, and fractured communities - while the anchor who helped sell the simple narrative kept the microphone.
The only side effect that truly lasted was the one felt by everyone who refused the script he helped write.

Re-posting this video almost exactly one year later, because unfortunately, it's relevant again. Seeing the scenes of destruction out of France and Italy, the two most incredible countries of all western civilization, is heartbreaking and maddening. We are living in shadow of a once-great society. The only answer is Jesus.

“It's time to begin stigmatizing them.”
Tom Nichols is a staff writer at The Atlantic and a retired Naval War College professor. His credentials are a B.A. in political science from Boston University (1983), an M.A. in political science from Columbia (1984), a Harriman Institute certificate in Soviet studies, and a Ph.D. in government from Georgetown (1988). His dissertation was on Khrushchev, Gorbachev, and Soviet military doctrine. He has no degree or training in medicine, virology, epidemiology, or public health. His expertise is how the Kremlin thinks about nukes.
He said the stigmatizing line on GZERO World with Ian Bremmer in April 2021, comparing vaccine refusers to people who once rejected polio and smallpox shots, and he discussed whether vaccines should be mandatory and the case for vaccine passports. In July 2021 he went on a public radio show to argue it was time to shame the unvaccinated, naming white conservatives like himself as the main target, while physicians on the same program warned that shaming backfires. That August he tweeted that DeSantis and other GOP governors were killing thousands of people. He was a Harvard Extension lecturer and a Kennedy School fellow. He still wasn't a doctor.
His best-selling book, The Death of Expertise, lectures the public for ignoring credentialed specialists and wandering outside their lane. His credentialed lane is Soviet doctrine and nuclear strategy, and in 2021 he lectured the public on pandemic policy from it. The Cuomo tweet drew a fair hit too: critics noted that Cuomo's own nursing-home order made the comparison backfire. The man who wrote the book on respecting experts spent the pandemic being the amateur.
Nichols spent a career warning about people who won't stay in their lane and then drove a tank down the center of someone else's.

“All of those people are smart enough to know what they’re saying is complete bullshit, and that’s the problem. They should be ashamed. Those lies are having an impact.”
Erin Burnett is the host of CNN’s Erin Burnett OutFront, holding a B.A. in political economy from Williams College. She previously worked as a financial analyst at Goldman Sachs. She possesses zero medical, scientific, epidemiological, or public health qualifications - her background is finance and television news - yet she used her nightly platform to police vaccine discourse and amplify pressure on the unvaccinated.
In July 2021 she played clips of Republican lawmakers and commentators expressing personal decisions against vaccination or raising questions, then declared their statements “complete bullshit” and that “they should be ashamed,” while stating that more than 99 percent of COVID deaths were among the unvaccinated and that declining vaccination rates were driven by such messaging.
Burnett repeatedly highlighted corporate vaccine mandates (including “get the vaccine or you’re fired” examples from companies like Durst), framed surges as a “pandemic of the unvaccinated,” and covered Biden’s 2021 employer and federal worker requirements as necessary steps against refusal. Her segments treated skepticism or non-compliance as disinformation whose impact required public shaming.
A political-economy graduate and former investment banker with no clinical expertise spent the period treating personal medical choices as moral and public-health failures requiring institutional force, while the vaccines she treated as decisive did not stop infection or transmission as initially claimed. Breakthrough cases occurred, the “99 percent” framing was later adjusted, and the human cost of exclusion and pressure fell on ordinary workers rather than the anchor. She remains a highly paid CNN host.
The host whose show is called OutFront spent the pandemic putting the unvaccinated outside the bounds of respectable opinion.

“Unless you have a LEGITIMATE medical reason, if you’re not vaccinated, I don’t want to see you, talk to you, work w/you, socialize w/you or know you. It’s enough. Your ‘personal freedom’ is holding the rest of us hostage. It’s selfish and stupid.”
Ana Navarro-Cárdenas is a political commentator for CNN and co-host of ABC’s The View, holding a B.A. in Latin American studies and political science from the University of Miami (1993) and a J.D. from St. Thomas University School of Law (1997). She possesses zero medical, scientific, epidemiological, or public health qualifications - her background is political strategy, campaign work, and television commentary - yet she used her national platforms to demand vaccination as a condition of basic social and professional contact.
In December 2021 she publicly declared she wanted no contact with the unvaccinated (absent a “legitimate medical reason”), labeling their choices “selfish and stupid” and claiming their “personal freedom” was holding everyone else hostage. Days earlier she wrote: “Shame on those standing in the way of mandates for political theater. They need to stop the bullshit. People, please get vaccinated.”
Navarro-Cárdenas repeatedly urged viewers and followers to get the shot, criticized resistance to mandates and vaccine passports (including attacking Florida’s ban as anti-business), and framed non-compliance as a moral failure rather than a personal medical decision. From The View and Twitter she helped normalize social ostracism and institutional pressure.
A political operative with a law degree and no clinical knowledge spent the pandemic turning private medical choices into grounds for personal and social exile, while the vaccines she treated as decisive failed to prevent infection or transmission at the rates once advertised. Breakthrough cases occurred even among the vaccinated (including high-profile examples on her own show), restrictions she backed later collapsed, and the social cost of exclusion fell on ordinary people. She remains a highly paid television commentator.
Ana’s expertise is politics and punditry, not pathogens - and she treated refusal of a shot as grounds for social death.

“It just seems to me that the one thing everybody has got to do is, whether they like it or not, get vaccinated.”
Andrew Lloyd Webber is an English composer and theatrical producer of musicals including The Phantom of the Opera and Cats, who studied at the Royal College of Music (after briefly attending Magdalen College, Oxford). He holds no medical, scientific, epidemiological, or public health qualifications - his expertise is music composition and theatre production. He used his public platform to demand mass vaccination and support coercive entry requirements for venues.
In May 2021 he called people refusing the COVID vaccine “selfish,” compared them to drunk drivers who might “accidentally… kill somebody,” and stated they were jeopardizing “an enormous number of people’s jobs and livelihoods” and the government’s reopening roadmap.
In November 2021 Lloyd-Webber declared that “the one thing everybody has got to do is, whether they like it or not, get vaccinated,” praised New York-style vaccine passports (where “you can’t buy a cup of coffee unless you are double vaccinated”), and argued that masks plus proof of vaccination in theatres were “a pretty low price to pay” and “the obvious thing to do” to avoid further lockdowns. He had earlier volunteered for the Oxford/AstraZeneca trial and repeatedly framed non-compliance as a threat to the industry he owns theatres in.
A composer whose career thrives on spectacle and individual expression spent the period insisting personal medical decisions were selfish and that proof of vaccination should be the price of admission to ordinary life - while the shots he treated as decisive did not prevent infection or transmission as initially claimed.
Theatres faced continued disruption anyway, breakthrough cases continued, and the “small price” of exclusion fell on audiences and workers rather than the impresario.
The man who wrote the songs for Jesus Christ Superstar decided the rest of the country needed a mandate-backed hymn of compliance.

“Funny thing is…. She DID have a choice. Get the #COVID19 vaccine or leave the job. She chose not to get the vaccine, so she got fired. Choices don’t protect you from consequences.”
Jason Johnson is an associate professor of journalism and communication at Morgan State University, holding a B.A. in government from the University of Virginia and an M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He possesses zero medical, scientific, epidemiological, or public health training, credentials, or expertise - yet routinely styled himself “Dr.” while dispensing policy prescriptions on vaccines, masks, and mandates as an MSNBC political contributor.
From his MSNBC perch and Twitter account, Johnson actively normalized coercion: he defended the firing of healthcare workers who refused the shot, framed Republican skepticism of endless restrictions as making the GOP a “pro-COVID party” comparable to pro-smallpox or pro-polio movements, and repeatedly attacked the lifting of mask or vaccine requirements for indoor businesses, airlines, and offices as “absolutely grotesque” or “ridiculous” - even while publicly noting that vaccinated and boosted people in his circle were repeatedly contracting COVID. He used his media platform to shame resistance as selfish or anti-science and to cheer business and institutional pressure that cost people livelihoods.
A political science PhD with no clinical knowledge spent 2021-2022 demanding others risk their jobs and submit to experimental products that, by his own later admissions, failed to stop infection or transmission - while he faced no personal professional consequence and continued collecting a university salary (typical associate professor range at Morgan State roughly $77K–$108K) plus MSNBC contributor fees. Breakthrough cases piled up around him, restrictions he defended collapsed under their own ineffectiveness, and the human cost of lost jobs, disrupted lives, and eroded trust fell on ordinary people, not the talking heads who amplified the pressure. Still lecturing the public on “public health” from a journalism department.
Jason’s PhD is in politics, not pathogens - yet he spent two years treating other people’s livelihoods like campaign talking points.

“You have witnessed - and you are a beneficiary of - a freaking miracle. That miracle is the development, testing, manufacturing, and global distribution of Covid vaccines. … At this point if they aren’t vaccinated and boosted, it’s by choice.”
Helen Branswell was a senior writer covering infectious diseases at STAT News, holding a B.A. in English literature from St. Thomas University in New Brunswick (1978). She had zero medical, scientific, epidemiological, or public health degrees or clinical training - her background was journalism, including years as a Canadian Press medical reporter, a CDC Knight Fellow, and a Nieman Fellow - yet her reporting and social media presence became a major channel for framing COVID vaccine uptake as both scientific triumph and social expectation.
In a February 2022 STAT piece she personally authored, Branswell declared the vaccines a “freaking miracle” and stated that non-vaccination among those with access was “by choice.” She amplified arguments for healthcare-worker mandates (including the “vaxxed or axed” framing), covered early high-efficacy claims and the rapid rollout in detail, and expressed dismay at the public’s failure to make “small sacrifices for the greater good.”
Through STAT and Twitter Helen helped normalize the view that the shots were decisive, that resistance required explanation, and that continued pressure and boosters were the responsible path - while occasionally noting the limits of sterilizing immunity.
An English literature graduate with no scientific credentials spent the pandemic years treating vaccination status as a moral and practical baseline while the products she celebrated failed to stop transmission at the rates initially advertised.
Branswell died on October 13, 2026, from complications of cancer at age 69. She was simply a well-placed journalist whose platform helped convert “get the shot” from medical advice into social and institutional default.
Helen’s training was in literature, not immunology - yet she helped write the narrative that turned a personal medical decision into the expected price of normal life.

“Look, I’m vaccinated and I was skeptical. Because it was free. I was like, ‘Free medicine? In America? Since when?’ I didn’t trust it. They was like, ‘trust science.’ I was like, ‘Well, I trust history.’ And history says, if this thing worked, you’d be charging us for it.”
Michael Che is a comedian and co-anchor of Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update segment. He graduated from the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts; no college degree is publicly documented, and he holds no medical, scientific, epidemiological, or public-health credentials of any kind. His platform is one of the longest-running sketch-comedy shows on American television, reaching millions of viewers weekly with news-adjacent jokes.
In February 2021 Che delivered a Weekend Update joke claiming Israel had vaccinated half its population and guessing “it’s the Jewish half,” drawing accusations of antisemitism and factual inaccuracy from multiple organizations. Later that year he publicly stated he had received the COVID vaccine while admitting initial skepticism rooted in its being free, contrasting it with historical patterns of paid medicine, and noted that multiple family members remained hesitant. The same show that gave him a national megaphone treated vaccination as material for punchlines and personal anecdote rather than medical expertise.
A high-school-educated comedian who expressed distrust of a free product still took it, then continued using SNL’s platform to joke about vaccination policy while lacking any relevant training. Michael’s career as a Weekend Update co-anchor continues; the people who faced workplace or social pressure to accept the same product he reluctantly took absorbed the consequences of that cultural normalization.
The man who joked that free medicine couldn’t be trusted still rolled up his sleeve - then kept the late-night slot.

“This is where about 90 million of our 330 million people remain unvaccinated out of ignorance, truculence or just plain terminal dumbassery, accelerating a viciously contagious coronavirus variant at a grim cost to everyone else. Many of them would rather be dead than wrong, and many will soon be at rest with their preference.”
Gene Collier earned a BA in journalism from Penn State in 1975 and has spent decades as a sports and general columnist for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, writing under the “Gene Therapy” banner. He holds no medical degree, no scientific training, and zero credentials in epidemiology, infectious disease, or public health - yet his twice-weekly platform in a major regional paper gave him a regular audience for pronouncements on pandemic policy and personal virtue.
Throughout 2021 he used that column to frame vaccine refusal as moral and intellectual failure. He repeatedly labeled hesitancy and non-compliance as “dumbassery,” argued that the majority of American COVID deaths were preventable by the shot, publicly announced his own vaccination status (“I got vaccinated. Twice. And boosted”), defended school mask requirements as settled law with no right to “make people sick,” and treated continued resistance as a collective suicide pact driven by ignorance and political truculence. His writing treated official guidance and vaccination as the only coherent response while dismissing dissenters as terminally foolish.
A sports columnist with a journalism degree spent the Delta wave equating refusal with a preference for death, then continued filing columns after breakthrough infections and the clear limits of vaccine impact on transmission became impossible to ignore. His platform remains; the people he called terminal dumbasses for declining a product that did not stop infection absorbed the social and professional consequences of that framing.
The man whose job was describing games spent the pandemic diagnosing the unvaccinated as already dead on arrival - and still collected his byline.

“Get vaccinated. This Delta Variant is real. The risks are real. And the vaccines are really safe and really effective. #RatherBeVaccinated”
Dan Rather earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Sam Houston State Teachers College in 1953 and went on to a long career as a television news anchor, most famously as the face of the CBS Evening News. He holds no degree, training, or credentials in medicine, epidemiology, virology, immunology, or public health of any kind - yet for decades he possessed one of the largest and most trusted platforms in American broadcast journalism.
In January 2021 he publicly received the COVID vaccine, posted the photo, and declared “Thank you science.” Throughout 2021 he repeatedly took to Twitter to urge “Get vaccinated,” launched the #RatherBeVaccinated hashtag that trended, amplified stories of unvaccinated patients begging for the shot as they were intubated, pushed simultaneous COVID boosters and flu shots, and condemned those who compared vaccine mandates to historical atrocities. He used his residual celebrity and millions of followers to treat vaccination as an obvious civic duty rather than a personal medical decision.
In November 2022, after four doses, he still contracted COVID, took Paxlovid, and tweeted that he had “got the vax, to the max” while remaining “wary about rebound infection.” The same anchor who spent 2021 framing refusal as a failure to heed science and a risk to others discovered that maximum compliance did not equal immunity - yet continued the gratitude-to-science script. His long career already included high-profile journalistic controversies; the pandemic simply gave him another chapter in which platform power substituted for expertise.
The man who once signed off with “courage” spent the pandemic signing on with a hashtag - and still caught the virus.
