Out of all the interactions, this one stuck with me the most: I had a black child come up to me absolutely flipping out, just overly excited and asking so many questions. I spoke with his mom after and she was so happy and relived to see another black paleontologist❤️

It never occurred to me how quiet the early to mid Permian probably was. External ears and ear drums hadn’t evolved in synapsids, the dominate life on land. Being functionally deaf to most sounds/frequencies means no real point in audio communication
