Taking in a St. Paul Johnson game tonight, on what would have been David La Vaque’s 51st birthday. He was a proud Governor. Perfect evening for football! – at St Paul, MN

The No. 1 ranked junior football player in Minnesota plays in a town of 686 people with no stoplight. He has more than a dozen DI offers. When he’s not on field, he’s likely taking care of his chickens and bottle calves. Meet Brodie Metzger in this Football Across Minnesota.

Behind every successful high school athletic program is an activities director carrying responsibilities most people never see. They hire and evaluate coaches. Manage budgets, transportation, facilities, eligibility, payroll and event operations. They oversee athletics, fine arts and student activities—often while navigating criticism, conflict and impossible expectations. A powerful Minnesota Star Tribune article highlights a growing crisis: Since last August, 75 activities director positions have become vacant in Minnesota—approximately 15% of the state’s high schools with an AD position. That is not simply turnover. It is a warning. Activities directors love serving students and making a difference. But passion cannot indefinitely overcome 60-hour workweeks, 90–110 nights away from home, inadequate compensation, limited onboarding and relentless public pressure. If we want strong education-based athletic programs, we must support the people leading them. That means: • Sustainable job expectations • Competitive compensation • Effective onboarding and mentorship • Adequate administrative support • Professional development • Respect from parents, coaches and communities We cannot continue adding responsibilities to the position and then act surprised when talented leaders walk away. Supporting activities directors is not merely an employment issue. It is an investment in coaches, students, families and the future of education-based athletics. Every superintendent, school board member, coach and parent should read this article. 🔗 varsity.startribune.com/minn… #AthleticAdministration #ActivitiesDirector #AthleticDirector #EducationBasedAthletics #HighSchoolSports #SchoolLeadership #Leadership #CoachDevelopment #StudentAthletes #WorkplaceWellness
