This has gone well beyond legitimate political disagreement. Students have now reportedly been filmed threatening to kill Pauline Hanson. Whatever your politics, that should horrify all Australians. One Nation can be challenged on immigration, energy, housing, infrastructure and government spending. That is how democracy operates. But years of reducing political opponents to labels like “fascist” and “far-right” have consequences. When people are taught that their political opponents are not merely wrong, but evil, some will eventually believe that almost anything is justified against them. The media has a lot of responsibility here too. Debate our policies, challenge our arguments and protest peacefully. But political violence or threats of it must never become normalised in Australia.
