The run game is often discussed as Gap vs. Zone, but the difference goes much deeper than simply “pullers vs. no pullers” or “man blocking vs. blocking an area.” Both families can feature double teams, combination blocks, vertical displacement, second-level climbs, and post-snap adjustments. The real difference is how the blocking rules organize those techniques and how the offense creates leverage Gap schemes such as Power, Counter, and often Duo use angle-based blocking relationships, down/back blocks, doubles, kick-outs, wraps, inserts, and pullers depending on the concept to construct the desired blocking surface at the point of attack Zone schemes such as Inside Zone and Outside/Wide Zone use coordinated rules based on defensive alignment and leverage, allowing the offensive line to work doubles, combinations, and overtakes while accounting for first- and second-level defenders The running back has reads in both families.
