van Rossem hard fork update 🍴 The van Rossem hard fork has been successfully enacted on Cardano Mainnet! 🎉 We would like to take a moment to recognise the work of the Hard Forking Working Group to get us to this moment. Coordinating ecosystem partners, SPOs, DApps, developers and exchanges, across multiple networks to ensure a safe Mainnet event. We would also like to thank DReps, SPOs and CC members for voting to ratify the hard fork initiation action. The first hard fork that DReps have been able to vote on, in addition to SPOs and the CC.

ETH adopting UTXOs is the ultimate validation, but here is the real alpha: Building DeFi on a UTXO model requires a completely different engineering mindset. #Cardano’s DeFi ecosystem has a massive head start. Our platforms have years of hands-on experience, optimization, and battle-testing under this exact architecture. While others start learning, Cardano is ready to explode. Good times are ahead! 🌊🚀 $ADA #DeFi
Vitalik Buterin just said: ALMOST EVERY MAJOR PIECE OF ETHEREUM WILL BE REPLACED! He's even talking about upgrading parts of Ethereum to the UTXO model - the same as Cardano 👀 Let's talk about it 👇

Wait, so managing permanent state is hard and UTXOs are actually better for payments? If only a major layer-1 blockchain had built its entire architecture around an Extended UTXO model from day one to avoid this exact issue... Oh wait, we did. 🤷‍♂️ Welcome to the future, Ethereum folks! #Cardano $ADA #eUTXO
Native UTXOs on Ethereum. Payments should be one-shot objects, not permanent state. Bitcoin got this right. Ethereum can bring the same idea to payments: prove existence from history, keep only a spent bit in state, and reduce permanent state by ~99.8%. Check out the blog post for details. ethresear.ch/t/native-utxos-…

SecondFi security issue wasn't a nonce reuse, or a weak key, but a public nonce used to sign keys. The Ed25519 standard defines how you are supposed to generate nonces, using a secret prefix. SecondFi didn't have a secret prefix at all, meaning anyone could derive the nonce by just seeing a signed transaction. Rolling your own crypto code is dangerous, I'm guessing the wallet wasn't audited, resulting in this problem going undetected. Read more at Tibane: tibane.net/research/secondfi…

A quick reminder to protect what you build: use a hardware wallet. Software wallets have multiple points of failure (compromised apps, phishing, malware). For true peace of mind, cold storage is the only way. Personally, I highly recommend @Trezor for its 100% open-source.

As per our previous post: xitter.cf/secondfiapp/status/206… We have identified the root cause and have since rolled out a patch for all unaffected wallets. This will allow us to resume normal operations soon. ----- Regarding affected wallets, 4 distinct draining events occurred. 3 were executed by external threat actors, resulting in a loss of ~16m ADA across 374 addresses. To prevent total loss during the active exploit, emergency rescue measures were triggered to secure the available ~129m ADA and continues to be routed to an independent, qualified third-party custodian, where they are held securely for the benefit of the affected wallet addresses. An external accounting firm has been engaged for a special audit to independently verify those holdings. We are working to facilitate the verification process so users can claim back their assets safely. Affected users should submit their claim at support.secondfi.io We take this incident seriously and are working to ensure all assets are returned to affected users as soon as possible. As stated, we have identified the root cause, it is at the address level. Please DO NOT RESTORE your recovery phrase into another Cardano wallet, this does not mitigate the security risk. The security risk occurs when an affected user signs a transaction. Further explanation to follow.
To provide more clarity, we have identified the nature of the incident, it is at the address level. The security risk affects wallet users when a transaction is signed. Therefore recovery to another platform or wallet does not mitigate the risk. 🚨 DO NOT restore your recovery phrase into a new Cardano wallet. We have isolated the affected wallets and will post mitigation steps shortly.

To be clear: this is NOT a hack of the Cardano $ADA blockchain. It affected the SecondFi wallet (formerly Yoroi). Root cause was regarding their native Cardano web wallet generation software, not the chain. Still harsh hit for the ecosystem, hopefully resolution for affected users will come quickly.

Mood might be down but there are still 2,915 registered pools out there - why not move your stake around a little and keep the eco system decentralised ? GNP1 has been here since mid 2020

🚨Now this is a big one - over 7 million in orphaned stake that will get no rewards !!! If you are staked to this pool or any other retired pools please move it now and support struggling small SPOs You can check for retired pools at server-tools.grahamsnumberpl…

We are a small self-hosted spo. No cloud.
We have 2921 registered pools on Cardano - lets not forget that ~half are small SPOs that get virtually nothing in rewards but contribute to the networks health and security 24/7 Small SPOs prevent creeping centralisation from large pools Move your stake to a small SPO today

Great summary of what happened with Cardano last weekend.
Below you will find my write-up as an independent after action report for the issue impacting Cardano late last week, along with things I learned, why I was impressed, and what I think we can do better at in the future. I try to strike the balance between confronting the seriousness of the issue, while defusing most of the over-stated positions from talking heads on Twitter. This is an adult conversation, not whatever the children are engaging in on Twitter this week. I don't think it's productive to get into debates of what constitutes "downtime" or not; Instead, I tried to equip you with a framework where you, dear reader, can think about these things for yourself, and decide what you want to call it. I just ask that you make that decision for yourself, or allow your audience to do so, rather than parroting some pre-decided talking points. More informed discussion leads to a higher quality industry overall. 314pool.com/post/cardano-pos…
