Brilliant!
In a couple of weeks I’ll be interviewing none other than John Lloyd for my podcast, The Laughter Effect. Few people alive have shaped British comedy more profoundly or more positively.
As co-creator and producer of Not the Nine O’Clock News, the driving force behind Blackadder and Spitting Image, co-writer on the original radio Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and the long-time mastermind of QI, John has an almost unmatched gift for spotting talent, sharpening ideas, and turning sharp observation into lasting laughter. Better still, he’s a genuinely lovely man.
To mark the occasion, here’s one of the sharpest sketches he helped bring to the screen: “The General Synod’s Life of Christ” (often called the “Monty Python Worshippers” or “Life of Python” sketch) from Series 1, Episode 6 of Not the Nine O’Clock News, broadcast on 20 November 1979. It is a near-perfect inversion of the real-life televised debate that had taken place just eleven days earlier. On 9 November 1979, Friday Night, Saturday Morning (hosted by Tim Rice) pitted John Cleese and Michael Palin against Malcolm Muggeridge and the Bishop of Southwark, Mervyn Stockwood, over the supposed blasphemy of Monty Python’s Life of Brian. Muggeridge, in particular, was at his most withering and self-righteous; the Bishop was scarcely more measured. The exchange has gone down as a classic of cultural clash - and, to many, a public-relations disaster for the Church’s representatives. The sketch, which John co-wrote, is one of the cleverest and best-timed parodies ever committed to British television.
Good day.

I discuss how Trump's attack on the International Criminal Court is an effort to make the world safe for American and Israeli war criminals. The European Union should invoke its blocking statute. The ICC should charge Trump and Marco Rubio with obstruction of justice.

Israeli soldiers were transformed into willful executioners of a genocide through orders and indoctrination, as in other genocides. What's unique here is the self-recorded thrill of many of them while destroying civilian lives: didn't the "most moral army" know this is criminal?

TODAY: The UN Human Rights Council final ruling on Israel’s brutal genocide in Gaza & beyond:
“In relation to Israels military operations in Gaza, we conclude that Israeli authorities are responsible for war crimes. Including extermination, murder, using starvation as a method of war, forcible transfer"
Hence, after Netanyahu’s grotesque gloating at UNGA this week - the only rightful action now is to SUSPEND Israel from the United Nations forum….

Let's be honest about what the United States came to Vietnam to do.
Not to "save" anyone. Not to "stop communism." Not to "protect democracy."
Those were the slogans they sold to their own people so the boys from Ohio and Georgia would climb onto the planes without asking too many questions.
What they actually came to do was make an example.
The "Third World" was getting ideas.
Countries were looking at their own land, their own oil, their own rubber, their own rice, and thinking "dangerous thoughts."
Thoughts like: this belongs to us.
Thoughts like: we don't need to ask permission.
Thoughts like: maybe we can choose our own way.
That could not be allowed.
So they chose Vietnam.
A small country. A poor country. A country of farmers and fishermen and people who had already spent a century being told they were too primitive to govern themselves.
The perfect candidate for an example.
The plan was simple: destroy Vietnam so completely, so publicly, so mercilessly, that every other poor country on earth would see it and go quiet.
Would swallow their dignity.
Would open their resources to the right corporations and smile while doing it.
They dropped more bombs on Vietnam than were dropped by all sides in all of World War II combined.
Let that land on you.
More bombs. Than all of World War Two. On one small country.
On its villages. On its hospitals. On its rice fields. On its children.
And they still lost.
Not only did they lose.
They lost to people in sandals.
They lost to people moving supplies on bicycles through jungle paths.
They lost to a people so committed to their own liberation that they built an entire city underground and kept fighting.
The example was made. Just not the one they intended.
The lesson the "Third World" learned from Vietnam was not don't resist.
The lesson was: they can be beaten.
The lesson was: their technology is not destiny.
The lesson was: if you are willing to pay the price of dignity, they will eventually run out of the stomach for the bill.
Every sanction today. Every coup. Every engineered "color revolution." Every "civil society" organization funded from Langley.
These are the tactics of an empire that learned in Vietnam that it cannot always use the full weight of its military without consequences it can't control.
They are not acting from confidence.
They are acting from the memory of Vietnam.
And Vietnam said no.

While Israel continues its genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, ethnic cleansing in the West Bank and persists with imposing its unlawful occupation and system of apartheid against Palestinians, PM Benjamin Netanyahu, wanted by the ICC for war crimes and crimes against humanity, is set to address the UN General Assembly in New York instead of standing trial at The Hague.
It is doubly shameful that the US government continues to ignore the arrest warrant against Netanyahu - while denying Palestinian representatives visas to attend the UNGA.
Nearly two years since the ICC issued arrest warrants against Netanyahu, impunity continues to reign - and Palestinians are paying the price. Continuing to undermine the ICC sends a cruel message to all victims of international crimes that prospects for justice remain elusive while the USA and other powerful states deliberately erode the universal value of international law.
All states, including the USA, should enforce the Court’s arrest warrants and hand over Netanyahu to the ICC. International law must be upheld and international justice mechanisms supported to end impunity for international crimes and ensure respect for human rights for all.

The ICC should (be left free to) do the rest.
