• My Story 🩹❤️🩹🩸
I was 13 when I came home from school. As usual, I had lunch with my mom & sister, then planned to take my afternoon nap before doing my homework. But that day, everything was different. It was the first time I had ever felt this way. A heavy shadow seemed to rest on my shoulders, growing heavier by the minute. My body ached, but I had no idea why. I felt something strange between my legs, so I went to the bathroom to check. When I saw the blood, my heart stopped. For minutes, I stood there in shock. I grew up in a conservative and religious family where subjects like menstruation and puberty were rarely discussed. Some of my classmates who had gotten their periods earlier had told me a few things, but experiencing it myself was completely different. I did not know what to do, whom to tell, or what was happening. I washed myself and convinced myself that I must have been injured somehow. But the bleeding did not stop. I kept cleaning myself, hoping it would end. My mom noticed that I was unusually quiet and in pain. After asking several times what was wrong, she finally asked, “Did you get your period?” My stomach dropped. I shook my head, frightened by how easily she had guessed. The atmosphere in the house suddenly changed. Everything felt quiet and heavy, as though all the tension had shifted toward me. I could not keep it to myself until the evening. Eventually, I gathered the courage to tell my mother. It was incredibly difficult to say it out loud. Her first reaction was to cry. She was crying because she was sad, but seeing her reaction made me feel guilty. I thought I had done something wrong. I felt as though this was my fault. There is a custom practiced by some families in Iran when a girl gets her first period: she is given a hard slap, followed by a sugar cube. My mother did not slap me. Instead, she asked my sister to give me a sugar cube. After that, I learned how to use sanitary pads and endure the pain, just as my friends had. At that time, we had no support. Even at school, we had to carry sanitary pads in secret, and saying the word “period” could feel like committing a sin. I wished someone had been there to teach us what was happening to our bodies and, more importantly, to take the burden of shame, guilt, and loneliness from our shoulders. I grew up in an Islamized society where girls’ schools could be conservative and religious. Congregational prayer was mandatory, and the only accepted excuse for missing it was a “religious excuse” a euphemism for menstruation. We had to use that language rather than simply say we were on our period. Otherwise, girls could be labeled immoral, dirty, or shameless, shouted at, humiliated, reprimanded, or even given lower conduct grades simply for menstruating. Experiences like these became one of the reasons many Iranian women developed resentment toward Islam and Muslims. We were taught to associate our bodies with religious shame, punishment, and humiliation. The day I got my first period, my mother told my father but he said nothing. Even today, I hide my period not because I am ashamed anymore, but because I no longer have the energy to explain that menstruation is nothing to be ashamed of, or to ask someone to understand me when I am in pain. But today, we are trying to change that culture. We share our stories and give a voice to experiences girls were once taught to hide. I know my experience is not unique to Iran. Women and girls around the world have, in different ways, been made to feel ashamed of menstruation a completely natural biological process essential to human reproduction. This shame has deep roots in patriarchy, misogyny, and religious extremism. I hope we can build a better society one where a girl experiencing her first period is met with knowledge instead of fear, compassion instead of shame, and support instead of silence. If you have had a similar experience, please share your story in the comments. I will read it. 🤍
