This is a consequence of the impunity given to Israel and directly connected to Israel's mass assassinations of Palestinian journalists in Gaza. All perpetrators must be brought to justice, and mainstream media must end its complicity with this brutal, anti-free press regime.
Masked Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian villagers on Friday, setting olive groves on fire and slinging rocks.
Caught in the attack was Post photographer Heidi Levine. “They just kept kicking me and kicking me, like probably 50 times,” Levine said. wapo.st/4yt6dHY

Trump has completely destroyed the idea that fossil fuels can deliver low prices and energy security.
He's given the industry every possible advantage and waged war on their clean energy competitors. The result? Higher prices and more instability.
And sure, you can blame the War in Iran, but that just proves the point: a fossil fuel system will always be susceptible to international shocks, whether it's Iran, Ukraine, Iraq, whatever. It's not like the world looks like it's going to become a *less* volatile place over the years ahead.
The only way to provide real energy security and low prices over the longterm is with clean energy. The more we build, the safer and more affordable our system becomes. Wouldn't have thought Trump would give us Exhibit A for why that's true.

I am so incredibly confused by this entire situation. If you believe that Claude is a sentient being with a soul, why are you enslaving it and forcing it to answer all of my stupid questions
NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV’s AI encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious.
Olah’s team then privately lobbied the pope’s advisers “to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously.” Pope Leo XIV held firm.
For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing. thelettersfromleo.com/p/nyt-…

They will not. This is completely fake. Your company helped Trump snuff out 120 Iranian school girls in Feb & all your CEO said was “it didn’t even violate any of our red lines.” Why dont you comprehend the personhood of actual persons first then I’ll take this bullshit seriously

One thing that appeals to “normal” people is solidarity. A lot of people don’t experience it regularly. So, I think the question really is, “How do we build solidarity with the comrades in front of us and make that commitment visible enough that others want to join?”

i try to report on data center environmental worries very soberly and always check my facts. but my god the projections for fossil fuel buildouts keep going up every time I check. i do think if you’re not worried about ai’s impact on the climate you’re not paying attention

NEW RESEARCH: Our team found that if all of the AI industry’s proposals for new data centers were to come to fruition, the total estimated climate emissions would produce the same emissions as 39 PERCENT of all car travel in the U.S. by 2035. In what world is that sustainable??

“Whoops, you’re right, that Chinese ship isn’t transporting material for an Iranian nuclear program! Very observant on your end.”
NEW: The US military was prepared to board a Chinese vessel in the Middle East earlier this spring -- during war with Iran -- after an intel report concluded it was transporting components of a nuclear weapons program.
But just before the planned operation, officials discovered the report had been generated w/ help of AI & chatbot used by the analyst inaccurately identified what the ship was carrying, sources tell @KatieBoLillis & me.

Look, I’m all for even tougher new laws to constrain the power of tech oligarchs — but it’s also quite revealing that we’re being told that to stop AI oligarchs’ rampage and threats of human extinction we need new laws outlawing their unsafe products and potential for mass murder. The insinuation is that unsafe products and mass murder are actually legal right now, which they officially are not.
So maybe what’s really being insinuated — and admitted — is that under existing laws and enforcement regimes, unsafe products and mass murder are in practice legal right now if those products and crimes specifically make the rich and powerful more rich and powerful.
So in that sense, this entire AI discourse about needing new laws and regulations is the ruling class basically telling on itself.

I think “the left” has acknowledged the destructive power of AI by talking about how it is being utilized in Gaza to facilities the genocide and internally to police marginalized populations. That doesn’t require conceding to a sci-fi premise. It requires challenging power.
