Let’s talk about the Chris Maragos case… aka the one where a Philly jury hit Eagles doctors with a $43.5 million verdict for negligently ending a Super Bowl captain’s career.
Maragos tore his PCL (with meniscus issues) in a 2017 game vs. the Panthers. Dr. James Bradley (longtime Steelers doc) did the surgery; Rothman Orthopaedics (Eagles team docs) handled rehab.
Plaintiffs argued the meniscus wasn’t properly addressed and rehab was advanced too aggressively (including running) despite a 2018 MRI showing persistent problems. That caused further damage and forced retirement in 2019.
Defense said the meniscus was stable and more surgery would have done more harm than good.
After a two-week trial (Nick Foles, Trey Burton, and Jordan Hicks testified), the jury found negligence in under three hours.
Liability: Bradley 67% ($29.2M), Rothman 33% ($14.3M). An economist put lost earnings at ~$8.7M as the floor; the rest reflected pain, limitations, and future care.
The verdict was upheld on appeal in 2024.
Maragos’ lawyer put it bluntly: it forces team doctors to stop focusing only on “when can he return to play” and start thinking about the next 50 years of a player’s life.
Fun fact, players have sued team doctors for negligent return-to-play decisions (ex-Eagles captain Chris Maragos won $43.5M over his knee care).
As a very disappointed Eagles fan, I’m enraged.
Hurts was in the hospital until 4 am, told not to sleep because of the clot risk, then cleared to play in London.
Now it’s DVT + bilateral pulmonary emboli and he’s out for the season on blood thinners. Granted I’m no doctor, but I wouldn’t be surprised if his career is over because of this.
There are some serious questions around that initial medical call that need to be looked at.
Health first for Jalen.

I’m firmly in the camp if you have to stay awake for 36 hours before kickoff so you don’t die from a blood clot you should probably skip playing that game.

#Eagles QB Jalen Hurts, who is out for the season after several blood clots were revealed in his lungs, has been undergoing tests for days.
Before the London game, Hurts was in the hospital until 4 am and did not sleep because sleep was a risk. He played without having slept.
I made a regrettable mistake and bought the @laurafarms_ book. I didn’t realize who the publisher was, or I would have passed on purchasing. But my little relative will enjoy the book and maybe inspire a future farm life.

A few words about my event tonight in Los Angeles with @minakimes for my book “The Game:” 6:30 pm at Diesel, A Bookstore in Santa Monica. I so appreciate Mina’s efforts for my book. She read all 192,000 words before doing her blurb for the book—incredibly nice and earnest. She agreed, gratis, to give up an evening in her mega-busy life to appear with me tonight. She has supported the book generously with social posts. We are colleagues but not close friends.
She did all of this because she is just a fine person, and I am grateful.

This book takes us on a scintillating four-decade football trip through the eyes of an American original (and someone I hug frequently). It's great.
My new book, The Game, has been a labor of love, and a tribute to my 40 years covering the NFL. Today, it's available in stores and online. Get your copy here:

Since QB starts were first tracked in 1950, only one QB has done the following in each of his first 2 NFL starts:
completed 70% of his passes
thrown a TD pass
rushed for 20+ yards
That one QB is Jalon Daniels. He was undrafted.

Jalon Daniels is the first undrafted rookie starting QB to beat the Cowboys since 1987 (Washington's Ed Rubbert).
