Thomas Sowell explains why fascism and Nazism are left-wing ideologies:
âBack in the 1920s, however, when fascism was a new political development, it was widelyâand correctlyâregarded as being on the political left.â
âJonah Goldbergâs great book âLiberal Fascismâ cites overwhelming evidence of the fascistsâ consistent pursuit of the goals of the left, and of the leftâs embrace of the fascists as one of their own during the 1920s.â
âMussolini, the originator of fascism, was lionized by the left, both in Europe and in America, during the 1920s. Even Hitler, who adopted fascist ideas in the 1920s, was seen by some, including W.E.B. Du Bois, as a man of the left.â
âIt was in the 1930s, when ugly internal and international actions by Hitler and Mussolini repelled the world, that the left distanced themselves from fascism and its Nazi offshootâand verbally transferred these totalitarian dictatorships to the right, saddling their opponents with these pariahs.â
âWhat socialism, fascism and other ideologies of the left have in common is an assumption that some very wise peopleâlike themselvesâneed to take decisions out of the hands of lesser people, like the rest of us, and impose those decisions by government fiat.â

Itâs also telling that advocates of affirmative action in college admissions and hiring are nowhere to be found when it comes to professional sports.
By the same logic, shouldnât Asians and Whites receive preferential treatment in basketball and football?
This selective approach goes to show that support for affirmative action is not rooted in principle but driven more by a desire to advance a particular political agenda.
Critics of affirmative action have long pointed out that it discriminates against Asian and White students.
Sowell explains how the problem goes further: affirmative action also directly hurts the very minority groups it is intended to help.
While teaching at Cornell, Sowell saw that half the Black students were on academic probation. Yet these were talented students: the average Black student at Cornell scored at the 75th percentile on the SAT and likely would have excelled at most colleges.
The reason these Black students were struggling was that they were competing against the nationâs brightest students. The average liberal arts student at Cornell scored in the top 1% on the SAT.
Sowell argues that affirmative action, by mismatching these talented Black students with schools, artificially turned them into failures.

Peter Thiel on why there are many great ideas yet to be discovered:
âIf you think there are no secrets left to be found, then you will not be the person to find them, and if you think there are some to be found, you may very well be that person. And there is something about the way in which globalization has led to a world of seven billion people where we always think, well, thereâs somebody else whoâs already thought of this problem, or itâs an impossibly hard problem.
So thereâs the sense that the world is a very flat place where youâre not going to be the one to discover it. And I think thatâs an intuition that one always should try to resist.â
