This is fascinating. I’m not so sure about what Trump Girl says about the lionesses’ rearing – this appears to be a safari encounter, but it certainly is possible the beast has been reared in close human proximity. Nonetheless, what makes this so captivating (to me, at least), is precisely the sizing-up that’s going on. The lioness eventually recognises that she’s looking directly at a predator far more dangerous than her brain can fathom. She can see the semblance of unusual calmness in the eyes of the man. The position of his forward-facing eyes conveying that he is himself a predator – yet, in the proportions of a smallish primate, resembling prey.
It’s the unusual paradox of our species: an ultra predator who could wipe out the lionesses’ entire species for sport, yet confined to a physical form that scarcely portrays lethality.
We are even more terrifying to ourselves because we can understand the advantage which an animal can only sense.
She doesn’t blink. She doesn’t flinch. She just looks straight through him.
That’s not curiosity — that’s a lioness measuring you.
In big cats, a hard, sustained stare is usually read as a challenge or predatory focus, not a friendly greeting.
Wildlife experts generally advise against direct eye contact for this reason.
The fact that she’s this close and still calm says more about her habituation (or the handler’s relationship with her) than it does about the safety of the moment.
⚠️ Extremely dangerous. Do not attempt.
My post was not meant to downplay the majestic, palpable, and awesome predatory presence of the lioness. Not at all. But she, for all her powerful beauty, cannot fathom the objects that surround the man, that place Sapiens at the apex. He who holds light in his hand, tames fire to drive his automobile, and who records moving images to share with all the world with not giving the miracle of such alien-like technology much of a thought.

We must see the return of the eccentric big family. No more of this docile stepford children stuff. There should be all sorts of pets, clashing personalities, sibling rivalries, inside jokes, nicknames, and secret languages.
This is one for you, @found_it_funny.
Lord Arthur Savile is a young man on the point of marriage — handsome, amiable, and possessed of great means, a nervous imagination, and an unwavering sense of duty, which together lead him down an absurd path: to commit, at whatever cost, the murder he believes unavoidable, and so spare his marriage the scandal of it.

My absolute favorite Roger Scruton quote:
"A conservative is someone who has found something to love and wants to retain it, and to protect it from all the sources of decay. It is a philosophy of love."
