We support @internetarchive's mission to provide universal access to knowledge. They make millions of books, texts, and archival materials available for all. And when more knowledge is open for anyone to access, share, and contribute to, we all benefit.

maybe everyone knows this but @openlibrary is an amazing service. Wanted to look up "States of Ireland" by Conor Cruise O'Brien & imagine how long it would take to get copy to TBS -- here you can borrow it for an hour or two for free. #research openlibrary.org/

One of the most surprisingly claims I hear repeated is: "this book is US copyrighted, therefore you need to get the author's permission before lending it".
As @doctorow explains:
"It's not a violation of copyright to buy a book and lend it out - it is copyright."
What's going on between #libraries & publishers?

Why the govt is trying to 🛑 PenguinRandomHouse from becoming a monopsony.
"A monopoly refers to a seller that has too much power over consumers; a monopsony has too much power over suppliers. In this case, the government says those suppliers are authors"

The publishers & lobbyists @AmericanPublish would have you believe their lawsuit is abt @internetarchive hurting poor authors.
But none other than @ChuckWendig writes "It’s not authors. It’s the publishers. They’re the ones doing this. Go be mad at them"

Publishers don’t want libraries to have a digital future.
Look no further than this lawsuit to shut down the @InternetArchive Library and many other public libraries’ ability to loan digital copies of the millions of physical books they OWN for proof.

In the @InternetArchive there are 700 digitized books abt the Japanese American WWII incarceration--the story of my community & my family. If the publishers win their lawsuit, these books go away. Access to history disappears.
