As she grows taller, Twiggy has increasingly been using her height to her advantage. On this particular evening, she arrived back at the stockades earlier than usual, only to find her bedroom door shut. No matter: she simply arched her long neck over the top of the fence, easily reaching the bounty of greens that had been placed in her stockade. She placidly snacked until a Keeper came over & opened the gate. Read Twiggy’s story: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/o…

Ahmed has a taste for tea — Keeper Kevin’s tea, in particular! Most mornings, she sidles over to Kevin and turns it into a tea party for two. (Of course, she doesn’t actually take tea, but she likes to pretend!)

As Esoit enjoys his bottle, keep your eyes trained on the elephant approaching from behind: it’s none other than Larro, our reliable Ithumba milk thief! Savvy to her antics, Head Keeper Benjamin redirects her to the mud wallow. (Rest assured, Larro gets all the milk she needs!)

Elephant roadblock! When its cleared, our bowser will fill the water trough that’s located here to the brim. In the dry season, it forms a vital network of water sources for the orphans & their wild friends.

Mwinzi’s favourite moments are spent in the mud bath, thrashing around in the red mud. It is often quite a mission to convince him that it is time to exit, but her Keepers say the lure of a dust bath usually does the trick.

Ukame will always have two families; one human, who rescued her when she became an orphan of drought. The other, elephant. In 2021, after we spent years raising her, she finally heard the call of the wild & rejoined her kin in Tsavo National Park. She hasn’t looked back since!

It’s coconut hour! Every week at our Kaluku Neonate Unit, we slather the youngest babies in coconut oil, which conditions the skin & provides healthy fats. The spa session concludes with a dust bath which shields them from biting insects. Nothing can replicate the care of an elephant mother, but treats like this keep the babies healthy & relaxed.

Each orphan is hand-fed specialist formula milk which is tailor-made (& measured) according to their age & exacting nutritional needs. But all Mwinzi knows is his bottle is done & he wants more! He makes his displeasure known, complaining loudly.
