Andy Burnham’s tendency to shoot from the hip is starting to raise eyebrows in Whitehall (as officials have to deal with the fallout).

Strangely, this did actually happen this week:
‘I was [at RAF Molesworth] saying why does Russia and other state actors use that [offset] strategy – because it’s to try to offset against our superiority, our information superiority, our conventional superiority, our economic superiority’.
Foreman said. ‘As Russia’s relative inferiority broadens against the West, we can expect them to step up these attacks, and I think they’ll be taking more risks’.

Exclusive: Andy Burnham is leaving the door open to a snap general election next year, The i Paper has been told.
Multiple sources close to the No 10 operation have suggested that an early general election in May has not been ruled out, despite the Prime Minister publicly insisting that there will be no early poll.
In a round of interviews last week, Burnham appeared to shut down the prospect of an election, saying: “No, no election any time soon. I’m focused on the job as prime minister doing what I said I would do.”
Asked by ITV Calendar whether the next general election would be in 2029, he was even more emphatic: “Yes, that’s when the next election will be. All of this speculation on an early election, I can knock that dead.”
He went on to say that calling an election would mean putting “self-serving politics” ahead of delivering for the public, adding: “I’m not going to do that.”
However, behind the scenes, some of Burnham’s closest advisers concede there is still a chance he could go to the country in May.
A source close to the PM told The i Paper: “There is a growing school of thought that there might be a ‘sweet spot’ for an early general.”
The argument is that Burnham could call an election before the right has a chance to reunite, given Labour’s much weaker performance in 2019 when the right was more united than it was in 2024.
Another No 10 source suggested Burnham would “give the country time to get to know the new PM” before making a final decision, which would likely depend on how well the Budget lands and the size of any “Burnham bounce”.
Labour officials have also been instructed to “be ready” for an early election, although a senior party source stressed that no decision has been made.

EXC: Senior No 10 staffers have held private discussions about the level of polling support they would need to call an election.
BUT, crucially, there are no plans to press ahead.
💫No 10 Chief of Staff James Purnell has privately told Labour MPs there are no plans for an early election
💫Amid vintage cars, a Vespa rally and live jazz at the Goodwood Revival race meeting last weekend, an unofficial but clear message was passed to outriders from the King that Burnham has no plans to call an election
💫The YouGov MRP poll published this week still puts Labour short of an outright majority. However well he did, Burnham would win far fewer seats than Sir Keir Starmer.
💫“It would be unforgivably reckless to throw it all away,” as a Cabinet minister put it.
💫Labour isn't ready for an election. New General Secretary Joe Fortune only started last week, the party is about to appoint a new head of fundraising
💫There will be no substantive retail offers in either Burnham's conference speech or the Budget, which there would be if an election was about to be called

Today in The Times I’ve spoken about something deeply personal.
In 2018 my brother Tariq took his own life. He never told anyone, not his closest family and friends, what he was going through. Looking back, we believe stigma was a large part of it.
He isn’t alone. More than 7,000 people die by suicide every year in the UK, and over 70% were not in contact with the mental health services that might have saved them. It remains one of the biggest killers of young people.
I’m supporting this campaign because of Philip Pirie, who lost his son Tom in 2020 and has since rallied experts and politicians around the country to push for change. When he approached me, I was very happy to join forces with him.
Together we’re calling – alongside psychiatrists, charities and MPs from across the political spectrum – for a national public health campaign to reduce the stigma around suicidal thoughts and encourage more people to reach out for help.
Public health campaigns work: we’ve seen it with drink-driving and HIV/AIDS. And the evidence suggests this one would more than pay for itself. Every life saved spares a family unimaginable grief and the country real cost.
Giving people permission to speak saves lives.
