the least we can do as a society for Sonny Rollins is to rename the bridge sonnyrollinsbridge.net/our-q… rest in peace 🕊️ almost a century on this earth. colossus of shred, improv god, an influence on our influences, laid down the vocab for so much of what we know as jazz & beyond
Sonny Rollins playing on the Williamsburg Bridge with tenor saxophonist, arranger, and educator Paul Jeffrey in 1968. By 1959, Sonny Rollins had grown increasingly dissatisfied with what he felt were his own musical shortcomings and withdrew from the public eye to embark on the first—and most storied—of his self-imposed sabbaticals. Residing on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, he sought refuge on the pedestrian walkway of the Williamsburg Bridge, where he could practice without disturbing a pregnant neighbor. From the summer of 1959 until the end of 1961, Rollins returned to the bridge almost daily, playing for as long as 15 or 16 hours at a stretch, through heat, wind, and snow, alongside the rumble of passing trains. Today, a fifteen-story apartment building named The Rollins stands on Grand Street, marking the site of his former home—a quiet monument to one of the most disciplined and transformative chapters in jazz history.

The way I prefer Scooby Doo’s parody of “All Tomorrow’s parties” by Nico x The Velvet Underground more than the original song itself…
You will be watching a series, and they will just randomly start playing the best song you’ve ever heard in your life.

This is 63 year old the_tunegirl, she later in life found analog modular synthesis and loves building every sound live with nothing but Eurorack. She just made her debut at Awakenings. This is what never giving up on passion looks like.

Midnight Oil’s vocalist Peter Garrett took ‘You dance like a White Mam’ as a compliment. He leaned into it. Owned it. And took it next level.
