You need to meet a colorectal surgeon
I truly do not think anybody loves the organ they specialize in more than nephrologists love the kidney

To be racist and sexist is to assume superior White and male leaders earn their positions through merit, and inferior Black and woman leaders receive their positions due to identity. These ideas show up in times of crisis: the Black and woman leader is assumed to be the problem.
Are you skeptical that Harvard president Claudine Gay, who is paid over $1 million per year, was not chosen based on merit, but rather on her race and gender?

We most certainly have the know-how (and outside pressure from referring physicians and family members) to offer ā€œsuccessfulā€ surgery to debilitated patients who have no chance whatsoever of a meaningful long term recovery. These are the toughest dilemmas in my current practice.

ā€œYour mother needs to be intubatedā€ OR ā€œYour mother’s breathing is getting worse. Can we talk about what this means & what to do next?ā€ @jackykruser Justin Clapp @rabob propose a shift in communication about patients with serious illness to promote transparent deliberation
Viewpoint expresses how use of certain language complicates decision-making for critically ill patients, and it highlights alternative phrasing for effective communication. ja.ma/3QaFKws

That sound you hear is the culture of American surgery breaking—in preparation to be rebuilt for the better. More healthy, more vulnerable, and more human. Thank you to @lubitz_carrie for the most important Presidential address I’ve had the opportunity to hear. #ASC2023

Overall, insurance access is vitally important to colorectal screening access. The West, which has greater and more equitable access to insurance sees significant decreases in stage at diagnosis at the recommended age of colorectal screening. 5/

Its not a pancake. It’s one slice of processed turkey and some carrots. And this was served to the kindergartner babies at MLK in Paterson for lunch. No bread. No knife. This is a week after the city promised to start serving better food.
