This is depressing but it's fascinating that a group of people who probably all pretend they are anti-capitalist go straight for the high end luxury goods for the looting.

This is Limoges city hall. On fire.
Storming and setting fire to seats of democratic government is insurrectionary violence. No grievance gives anyone the right to do this.
Students have legitimate grievances. This violence is burying them. The missing teachers, overcrowded classrooms and anxiety about the future disappear behind the destruction.
For a politics built on permanent confrontation, that can be useful. Mélenchon’s strategy connects separate grievances into a single indictment of the system. The confrontation becomes the cause.
And violence feeds on perceived weakness. When the state appears to have disappeared, people test its limits. Each retreat invites another challenge. A kind of madness takes hold: destroying the institutions we depend on comes to look like liberation.
I wrote in June that democracy rests on a promise: that the state is strong enough to guarantee everyone the same protection, the same rights and the same rules. When that promise breaks, the consequences extend far beyond security.
Fear spreads. People protect themselves because they no longer trust that they will be protected together. They retreat into their group, their community, their identity. Those promising order gain ground. Distrust replaces the confidence that makes a common life possible.
And is exploited by all those, inside and outside the country, who want to see it burn!

Close to sixty percent of the French economy is government spending. All else aside, the idea that burning down beautiful buildings in Limoges is the understandable consequence of “ruling class” disinterest is self-indulgent bullshit.

One of the main ways Rory Stewart likes to sound clever is by very deliberately pronouncing names and places in the manner of their local dialect. Very irritating. It normally makes him sound ridiculous and sometimes it’s totally inexplicable - I just spent an entire episode listening to him pronounce Dubai as Joobai

A dog used to follow pilgrims to a Hindu religious site in Sri Lanka, and videos of it were shared warmly in Sri Lankan Hindu circles.
In late June, offended by the videos, a Muslim man went to the pilgrimage site, located the dog, kicked it, and uploaded the video, sparking outrage. During one such argument, a Sri Lankan Muslim wrote a derogatory post against the Hindu deity.
Anojan Sivarasa, a Sri Lankan Hindu working as a laborer in Saudi Arabia, didn't like the comment and responded with a reply that was allegedly derogatory to the Prophet.
Anojan's well-wisher immediately warned him. He took down the comment and issued a video apology within five minutes in which he said he was responding to an insult to his faith. However, it was too late. Anojan's fellow Sri Lankan Muslims had already taken a screenshot and emailed it to his employer in Saudi Arabia. His employer promptly reported it to the authorities, who arrested Anojan and put him on trial. He has been sentenced to death.
Saudi Arabia rarely reverses a decision once it has made one, but there should be global outrage over this. Blasphemy laws or whatever, the man was only responding to an insult to his faith, deleted the comment, and issued an apology within minutes, yet he will still have to pay with his life while those who provoked him are rejoicing in Sri Lanka. This is unacceptable. Anyone calling themselves a free speech supporter and not opposing this is a hypocrite of the highest order.

I wrote this shortly after the 7 October atrocities three years ago. I'm reposting it because it's vital to understand the hatred of women & sexual excitement at the heart of organisations like Hamas & ISIS.

It's remarkable that a woman can complain about free speech in Britain while supporting execution for blasphemy in Saudi Arabia.
This might be one of those paradox of tolerance situations.

Reminder that the French government covered up the Bataclan attacks because the Islamic terrorists cut off the genitals of the victims and shoved the body parts in their mouths after disemboweling them.
This video is absolutely sadistic.

Why has the return of the Bayeux Tapestry prompted such extraordinary public interest? What does the tapestry tell us about British history and national identity? Has the trend for politicising art and heritage now backfired?
