Protecting #RiverNile is everyone's daily responsibility.
I spent the better part of today in the villages of Kangulumira and Busana in Kayunga District alongside leaders, led by Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Mr. Nsimbi Jimmy Mugwanya, community leaders, my colleagues from the Ministry of Water and Environment (@min_waterUg), and local residents. Together, we erected concrete pillars marking the 100-meter buffer zone along the #RiverNile to halt the severe degradation of its banks.
This demarcation is more than a boundary line. It it is a vital lifeline for one of Uganda’s most crucial natural treasures.
Seven years ago, the Ministry, under the leadership of Permanent Secretary Dr. @okidi64 , launched initial efforts to plant bamboo within the immediate 30-meter zone and the bamboo is flourishing while restoring the beauty along the river. Bamboo is exceptionally effective at soil conservation, using its dense root network to prevent severe erosion, trap harmful runoff, and stabilize riverbanks. Protecting this riparian strip is essential for preserving the #RiverNile’s delicate freshwater ecosystem.
Unchecked encroachment destroys fish breeding grounds, degrades water quality for downstream communities, and accelerates siltation, threatening both biodiversity and regional livelihoods.
These conservation actions mark the beginning of a broader initiative: similar restoration and protection measures being rolled out continuously along the entire stretch of the River Nile up to the Uganda–South Sudan border, ensuring this vital resource endures for generations to come.
