Pretty funny to see everyone blame this (rightly condemned, to be clear) on whatever their political bogeyman is: I've just seen people say that this is because of, take your pick, "communism," "Islamism," "third worldism," "Russia," and "China". As if France needed any outside help to riot... Maybe some people need to brush up on our history, or read Victor Hugo's "Les Misérables"... This isn't to romanticize the rioters in the least. A reminder that in Les Misérables there's the figure of Thénardier, a horrendous scoundrel who exploits the chaos around him, robbing corpses and fleecing anyone he can. Every chaotic moment in French history has its share of Thénardiers, and this one is no exception. It's just too easy, and actually useful to those in power, to blame this on outside forces. At the end of the day, this anger was made in France, is happening in France, and can only be solved in France. And, as painful as it is to hear, if one studies history, this is pretty much exactly what's expected at the stage France is at. People have studied this. Whether you take Ray Dalio’s six-stage cycle theory, Peter Turchin’s "elite overproduction" thesis or the Chinese dynastic cycle framework, they all come to the same conclusion: when debt piles up, public services crumble and those in power become incapable, the streets eventually explode. In fact it's almost eerie how France ticks almost every box of most cycle theories: - Fiscal distress (debt is 119% of GDP and we now pay more to borrow than Italy or Greece), - Crumbling public services: a reminder that these protests (now turning into riots) started with high school students protesting over the state of education - Political paralysis and a legitimacy crisis (Macron has an insane 82% disapproval rate, he's definitely lost the Mandate of Heaven...) - Popular immiseration with a record poverty rate at 15.4% and a median wage at only €2,190 net per month for a full-time private sector employee (you can't even afford to rent a decent flat in any major French city with this) "Third worldism" or "Islamism" isn't the cause of any of this: French governments didn't borrow like there's no tomorrow (the last balanced budget dates back to 1974!) because the "Muslim Brotherhood" told them to, and it wasn’t Putin or Xi who left French classrooms without teachers... Sadly the reactions - scapegoating - are ALSO typical of this stage of the cycle: Dalio lists among the classic markers of Stage 5 the emergence of "scapegoat classes who are commonly believed to be the source of the problems" (linkedin.com/pulse/delving-s…), alongside a "loss of truth in the public domain," with people more interested in hunting for culprits than looking for solutions. So what is the solution? Well, the way the Chinese dealt with it was basically a reset - regime-changing themselves with a new dynasty claiming the Mandate of Heaven, usually after decades of rebellion and war. Not exactly a hopeful prospect... There is also the exception where a dynasty managed what the Chinese call a 中兴 (zhōngxīng, "restoration"): profound reform from within before the whole house came down. It succeeded a few times (e.g. the Tongzhi restoration during the Qing dynasty) but usually could only buy a few more decades, rarely more. In 1945, the writer Huang Yanpei famously asked Mao how to break free of the cycle (cn.vlex.com/vid/constitution…), framing it in those terms: "People are careful and hard-working at first, for bold measures are the only possible ways to break through difficult conditions. But when things gradually get better, people begin slacking off: laziness may spread through a long history and is impossible to be corrected when it becomes a common practice. Gradually expanded territory requires corresponding increases in talent, but when the latter is insufficient, the central control will become weak. In a word, no one can escape the 'vicious cycle' of dynastic rise and collapse." Mao replied that democracy was the answer, because "as long as the people can supervise the government, the government dare not slacken." And Xi later added a "second answer" (chinadailyhk.com/hk/article/…): a system capable of "resolute self-reform". The jury is still out on whether China has broken the cycle, but if France has any hope of escaping it, it will need both answers at once: a government that truly answers to its people, and very resolute self-reform. One thing the answer definitely isn’t: turning on each other. In all these cycle theories, division and scapegoating appear on the way down, never on the way back up.

This is a huge scandal: The campaign of Brazil's far-right, US-backed presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro paid a US company that sells an AI system for manipulating elections. Bolsonaro's right-wing party also paid the US company, which maps voters and makes fake social media accounts to spread disinformation online targeting crucial voters. This revelation comes after Meta admitted that it censored the accounts of left-wing candidate Lula da Silva and promoted Bolsonaro on Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. This is the source (only in Portuguese): intercept.com.br/2026/10/16/…

To international public figures with a platform: Brazil needs your attention. A far-right, religious extremist congressman from a small town in Minas Gerais is getting more Instagram Reels views (but WAY less followers) than the Kardashians, Lionel Messi, MrBeast, Trump and Obama. Much of his content consists of disinformation and AI-generated slop. We need the world to question Meta's role in shaping Brazil's elections, especially in a country where Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp dominate much of the digital landscape, influencing how millions of Brazilians consume news, share information, and engage in political debate. When a single corporation holds this much power over public discourse, algorithmic transparency and electoral integrity become matters of global concern.

That is a lie. Brazil did not accumulate R$10 trillion of new debt under Lula. R$10.9 trillion is Brazil’s TOTAL gross government debt, accumulated across successive governments. It includes the federal government, social security, states and municipalities. Look at the actual numbers for the 12 months through July 2026: • Total gross debt: R$10.9tn, 82.5% of GDP • Primary deficit: R$89.3bn, 0.67% of GDP • Interest charges: R$1.1505tn, 8.67% of GDP • Total deficit including interest: R$1.2398tn, 9.34% of GDP Interest charges alone were nearly 13 times the primary deficit. And in 2026 itself, interest added 5.7 percentage points to the gross debt-to-GDP ratio, while net debt issuance added 1.5 points. So taking the entire R$10.9tn accumulated debt stock and calling it “Lula’s debt” is simply false. Brazil has also been dealing with major external economic shocks. 1. Trump imposed an additional 40% tariff on many Brazilian products, bringing the tariff to 50% where applicable. His own executive order explicitly cited Bolsonaro’s prosecution while imposing the measure. That made affected Brazilian exports dramatically more expensive in the US, putting pressure on exporters, jobs and investment. Increasing prices and costs region wide. 2. The US-Iran war and disruption around the Strait of Hormuz drove global energy costs sharply higher. Hormuz normally handles roughly one-fifth of global oil shipments. Brent has remained around $100 a barrel, about 40% above its pre-war level. Also increasing prices and costs region wide. Brazil consequently introduced roughly R$40bn in fuel-relief measures from March through September, including diesel subsidies and fuel-tax cuts, specifically to cushion consumers from soaring global oil prices. Lula’s fiscal policies can be criticised, but the numbers matter. R$10.9tn is not “Lula’s debt,” interest is currently a huge component of Brazil’s deficit, and Brazil has simultaneously absorbed major external shocks from Trump’s trade policy and the global energy crisis. sources: bcb.gov.br/estatisticas/esta… whitehouse.gov/presidential-… whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2… reuters.com/business/energy/… reuters.com/business/energy/… reuters.com/business/energy/…

The recent Ukrainian drone strikes that shut down 3 out of 5 major Rusky data centres has become interesting insofar that it has drawn attention to something quite insidious. The strike has disrupted AI infrastructure, cloud platforms & everyday digital services. Not great news for the Ruskies, to be sure - & certainly not great news for their misinformation & propaganda management facilities - but depending on what side of the spectrum you are on - it’s enlightening. The drone strike damaged Yandex facilities in Kuluga, Sasovo & Vladimir - & severely disrupted online misinformation by crippling the physical infrastructure & AI supercomputers used to generate &automate state-backed propaganda. “Data tracking from platforms like Cloudflare revealed that immediately following the strikes, Rusky bot traffic on the web plummeted to just 0.4% of its recent peak - effectively choking off foreign troll operations in the short term”. It’s interesting that bot traffic plummets on the web after Russia loses over half of their data centres. Furthermore .. “Most modern misinformation relies on vast automated bot networks to artificially amplify FAKE narratives on platforms like X, TikTok & Facebook. Because the targeted Yandex data hubs hosted substantial cloud infrastructure, taking them offline directly severed the connection to thousands of coordinated bot accounts. Security researchers noted that this structural damage forces an immediate drop-off in the sheer volume of spam and coordinated influence campaigns globally” “Kremlin-backed influence groups (such as Storm-1516 or the Doppelgänger network) heavily utilize artificial intelligence to create cheap deepfakes, clone news websites, and manipulate text at scale. (The Guardian) The strike on the Sasovo facility specifically targeted a hub housing two of Yandex’s three AI supercomputers used to train advanced language models.(BBC) Without the high-performance computing power needed to render deepfakes & generate automated, localized fake news articles in real-time, the Kremlin’s ability to run advanced, AI-driven campaigns is significantly throttled (BBC). A hidden front of online misinformation is LLM grooming - where Russian networks flood the open web with millions of pro-Kremlin articles to intentionally poison the data scraped by Western AI chatbots (like ChatGPT or Gemini). Over 80 digital and cloud services were forced completely offline by these strikes. By bringing down these networks and their hosting infrastructure, Ukraine has paused the generation of the "poisoned" data that chatbots accidentally cite as fact” 🙄🤔 While these strikes may not permanently eliminate Russia’s decentralised cyber-warfare capabilities - they’ve dealt a blow to the scale, the automation and the speed at which online misinformation can be deployed globally. It has also drawn attention to just how much Russia has been involved in global cyber propaganda and how much they have been interfering in foreign affairs through manipulation via social media platforms globally. I’m pretty sure this is the tip of the iceberg. Russia have been doing shyte like this for a very long time and they are very good at it. Those who control the dissemination of information control the world - regardless of whether that information is actually true or not. The Russians over the last few decades have developed that into an art form. For the most part, online social media platforms accommodate the massive amount of manipulation of information, misinformation and lies - and those who participate on these online platforms are either the protagonists or the victims. It is sickening to see just how much information is manipulated and just how many people are being manipulated. People might want to take a really good look at what is really going on. The Russian-bot mantra is not a fairy story. Let’s see if this post gets any traction with the algorithms. It certainly won’t with the bots today.

When Ukraine destroys Russian data centers, hoards of aggressive right-wing bots disappear, and Twitter becomes much friendlier. Isn’t that interesting? So much of our politics is driven by the internet, and so much of the internet is driven by Russians who want to hurt us. Shouldn’t we do something about that, given that we know it?

If confirmed, this is telling: Russian data centres get hit, and online activity around AfD suddenly plummets. 📉 So much talk about German patriotism… then the connection from Russia goes down. 🤔🇷🇺
