Excited to share our newest project: an exploration of 3.5 lakh tax disputes across India's high courts! We visualised the kinds of taxes that drive litigation, how they are captured by high courts, how long they take to be disposed, and which parties tend to bring cases. (1/7)
Introducing a new addition to the DAKSH Dashboard - the High Court Tax Dashboard! - database.dakshindia.org/tax-… Analysing data from #TAX cases in high courts sheds light on the health of the tax administration system of the country. In this tax dashboard, we introduce you to tax matters at High Courts and share our dataset in an interactive format for deeper understanding. Over the coming weeks, we will continue to share insights and takeaways from this data set. Did you know about ‘bail melas’ that are held by some High Courts? In these informally-termed melas, the court disposes of a large volume of bail cases, often before significant holidays such as the Holi or Durga Puja. While creating the DAKSH High Court Dashboard, we could identify at least 50 days (between 2017-19) on which 200 or more bail cases were decided in Jharkhand. Leah Verghese and Smita Mutt @ohsmita, in this article, talk about the escalating 'bail burden' in India, shedding light on the increasing number of bail cases in high courts and the extended time and attention required to resolve them.

We're back with another look at #eCourts judicial data and what it tells us about how bail applications move through the system. We've learned that: - a greater absolute number and relative share of bail cases are being appealed at the High Court level, (1/3)
Introducing a new addition to the DAKSH Dashboard - the High Court Bail Dashboard! - database.dakshindia.org/bail… Analysing data from #bail cases in high courts sheds light on the vexing issue of undertrial detention and its burden on the criminal justice system. To paint a picture of just how many bail appeals are heard by High Courts, DAKSH looked at the Supreme Court Annual reports from 2015-16 onwards. This was supplemented with case data from e-courts, which added a deeper understanding of the problems. Today, we would just like to share this with you, to observe, and analyse. Let us know what stands out for you. Over the coming weeks, we will continue to share insights and takeaways from this data set. Short piece for @Ideas4India: I argue that male migration is leading to *feminization* of local political engagement in migrant sending areas like rural Bihar. Presence of women in male political arenas like block offices (in pic) is shifting the contours of engagement w/state.

In my debut long-form story for @techreview, I write about how ASHA workers are using WhatsApp to save pregnant women. I spent many months observing how ASHAs used messages, statuses & hyperlocal groups to slash India's high maternal mortality rate. technologyreview.com/2023/02…

I wrap 2022 w/h a celebration of the promise and potential of democracy. In a time of deep democratic discontent, this is a reminder of what democratic political action can achieve, for its own sake. 2 pieces. 1 in HT Today (1/2)
