A new edition of Zotero, Zotero 7, has been released. It is the biggest update in Zotero’s 18-year history, and the company describes it as a major leap forward in design, performance, and functionality.

« An association between two variables merely implies that knowing the value of one variable provides information about the value of the other. It does not necessarily imply that one causes the other. Hence the mantra: “association is not causation.” »

This whole article is incredibly interesting:
There are crystal structures that simply won't form anymore, even though they did a few decades ago. Real life Ice-9? Could make an incredible sci-fi book.

Something that has come up here a few times and that I encounter more than I expected is researchers at universities refusing to run provided EDR because they own their research and don't want the university to access it. At the same time, they're a target for various APT groups and have a lot of randomness exposed to the internet.

Never underestimate the destructive power of a supervisor who thinks that regulations don't apply to them... any relation this cartoon has to current news stories is purely coincidental

Yes... I had to censor my work without which my committee wouldn't sign it... But the great thing with Internet is that you can post the original version and even add a disclaimer explaining why it differs from the published version…

If you are running into broken GitHub integrations today, it's because GitHub issuecomment IDs have just passed the maximum value of i32.
For example @rustlang's rfcbot is currently out of commission with an i32 overflow.

1 in 10 of the top 100 ‘best’ scientists are named Michael or Eric, but only 3% are female, according to @guide2research. Putting aside the obvious flaws of the H-index, these numbers are disheartening. Thanks to @mbeisen for sharing. research.com/scientists-rank…

Doing some research on design systems / design tokens, especially around color.
What are some good open source color palettes?
So far I have: Open color, Open props, Tailwind, Material, Adobe Spectrum, GitHub Primer, Ant Design, IBM Design Language, Radix UI, Bootstrap.
Req: Need to have a page that lists all their colors (see examples).

i genuinely feel unsafe with the status quo practices in software development
npm/poetry/cargo/whatever install 600 packages by a bunch of randos, and then load that code in a process that can read all my session cookies and signal messages and keypresses

Ha! The new AirTag firmware was supposed to roll out to 1% of users on March 19 and eventually to 100% of users on April 9. However, Apple put "24" instead of "2024," so the firmware went to 100% of users right away because "April 9, 24" already passed nearly 2,000 years ago.
Looks like Apple accidentally set the deployment dates for the 2.0.73 AirTag firmware to "m/d/24" instead of "m/d/2024" that has used in previous versions and which the AirTag update system uses as date format.
As a result, AirTags think the deployment dates are in the year 24 and they just skip to the 100% rollout batch 😅
Which explains why everyone’s AirTags are getting it
Left is 2.0.61, right is 2.0.73
