Whenever people describe Canada as a ridiculous joke of a country, it genuinely irritates me. Not because I can’t take a joke about Canada, but because I find it deeply disrespectful to the Indigenous peoples who have suffered under this country’s history and institutions. There is absolutely nothing funny about residential schools, the Sixties Scoop, the Highway of Tears, or the forced sterilization of Indigenous women. You can joke about a country without forgetting the people who have endured generations of violence, injustice, and trauma because of it.
