My heartfelt prayers are with the families, friends, and everyone impacted by the shooting in Oregon. It’s heartbreaking and deeply unsettling when violence erupts in our communities without warning. It’s difficult to understand, and even harder to accept. When a 16‑year‑old decides to shoot and kill elementary school children and their teacher, it reflects not only a profound lapse in judgment and emotional stability, but also signals something much deeper. What causes a young person to lose faith in the very community that raised them? What leads them to plan such a violent act, access a firearm at home, and carry out a crime against innocent children and their teacher? We may never fully comprehend the silent motivations within this young mind. But what we can do — and must do — is stay connected to the young people around us. Talk to them. Listen to them. Pay attention to their struggles, their friendships, their isolation, their online world, and their emotional health. Ensure they feel supported, valued, and engaged in their schools and communities. Above all, help them stay safe, healthy, motivated, and hopeful. Because when young minds believe they have a place in the community, the ability to make a positive impact, and a path toward a better future, they do not turn toward violence. Let us each do our part. Mentor a young person. Reach out to someone who seems alone. Offer guidance, encouragement, and presence. A small act of care today may prevent another tragedy tomorrow. #community #together

Are we safer post-9/11? The short answer: Yes, against the catastrophic foreign-directed plots of 2001. But the threat didn’t disappear—it evolved. Over the past two decades, sweeping reforms fundamentally reshaped national security, breaking down silos between intelligence agencies and hardening critical infrastructure: • Hardened Aviation: Reinforced cockpit doors, universal baggage screening, and advanced passenger vetting made the hijacking of commercial airliners near-impossible. • Broken Silos: Agencies like the NCTC, ODNI, and expanded Joint Terrorism Task Forces bridged the gap between foreign intelligence (CIA) and domestic law enforcement (FBI). • Disrupted Safe Havens: Transnational groups can no longer run large-scale paramilitary training camps abroad without swift interdiction. However, resolving the vulnerabilities of 2001 created a new set of complex challenges: • Decentralized, "Lone Wolf" Attacks: Adversaries pivoted away from complex, multi-year plots toward online radicalization, weaponizing rental trucks, knives, or firearms that leave almost no intelligence footprint. • Domestic Extremism: Threat assessments consistently highlight domestic violent extremism as a primary lethal concern inside U.S. borders. • Cyber & Infrastructure Risks: The modern attack surface has shifted toward software vulnerabilities, power grids, and water systems. • The Civil Liberties Trade-off: Heightened security introduced vast watchlists, privacy trade-offs, and systemic friction for everyday citizens. The post-9/11 defense apparatus solved the catastrophic blind spots of the past. Today’s challenge is defending against threats that are smaller, more dispersed, and increasingly digital.
