The New Yorker just published an essay I wrote. This is the first time I have written about my family story. Words can not express my gratitude, especially to @RohdeD

I stand firmly with @JewherIlham who has fought tirelessly for the freedom of her father, my father, and of countless Uyghurs. Every single world leader with principle should echo her call and press Beijing.

12 years ago today, my father, Ilham Tohti, was sentenced to life in prison for “separatism”—a charge that bears no resemblance to the work he dedicated his life to.
My father is an Uyghur economist, scholar, writer, educator, husband, father, and believer. Above all, he was a man who devoted his life and his own resources to fostering dialogue, supporting his community, bridging divides, and helping people understand one another.
He is not the criminal the Chinese government has portrayed him to be. A man who spent his life building bridges should never have been locked behind bars.
For 12 years, our family has lived with his absence. For 9 years, we have had no family visit with him.
Today, on the 12th anniversary of his life sentence, I once again call on the Chinese government: Release Ilham Tohti.
Let my father come home. Let him read, write, think, teach, and love his family freely again! #FreeIlhamTohti

We've published a new analytical review on prisoner fates and numbers: blog.shahit.biz/2026/09/01/l…
The focus is on the situation today, and though data is very limited, it appears safe to say that at least ~200000 remain incarcerated (since 2017-2018).

A Jeju police officer was arrested today for deliberately shutting down missing-person cases — not one or two, but roughly 298 of them. He told families their loved ones were safe, then quietly deleted the cases from the missing-persons system.
The case cracked open because of Jang Mi-ran's disappearance, which turned out to expose a far larger cover-up.
Jang Mi-ran, 37, went missing on May 12.
Her boyfriend reported it, and the officer assigned to the case told him he'd reached her, that she was safe, and that she didn't want her location shared — then closed the file that same night. It later emerged there was no record police had ever actually contacted her.
Once the officer was identified and implicated, investigators went back through his past cases. Between August 22 and 24, they found four bodies of people who had been reported missing — Jang Mi-ran among them, found 104 days after she disappeared, just a few minutes' walk from where she'd been staying. The other three were men, two in their 60s and one in his 70s.
Since prosecutors' authority to conduct supplementary investigation was abolished, public anxiety has been mounting over how a single officer could kill hundreds of cases with almost no way for anyone to catch it.

An extradition request is an allegation. No court has tested the evidence behind it. Yet people sit in custody for months while the paperwork is argued, and the requesting state risks nothing if it is wrong.
