This is one hell of a quote from UCLA HC Bob Chesney on practice “The leading cause of success is well managed failure” Chesney understands that the old saying “perfect practice makes perfect” is 100% false, and that a certain amount of failing in practice is what makes you Improve. If you don’t fail, you don’t have to problem solve, and Football is a game of problem solving So many coaches don’t fully grasp this concept and I am now even more impressed with Chesney than I already was. UCLA got an absolute stud
What separates a Bob Chesney practice from the rest, and could we Brandon attending one soon? 👀

Wanting a result doesn’t make it happen. Taking responsibility for what you control gives you a chance. Value the work. Stay committed to the process. Let the results follow. Bob Bowman knows this better than anyone else: "Value the process more than any particular outcome. Outcomes largely depend on what other people do and we have no control over that. What we do have control over is ... the way that we choose to train, the standards that we hold for ourselves, the attitude we bring to our work. If we focus on controlling the controllables, the outcomes will naturally flow from that."

Your impact should go beyond your performance. Make your team better. Make the people and places around you better. Always.

"You can't be defined by just winning. You have to be defined by who you become along the way." The greatest thing you build in pursuit of winning is yourself.

If I could sit down with my 25 year old self, I would tell him…  The fastest way to lose peace is to make something temporary your source of identity. A score. A role. A title. An opinion. A result. Build your life on what cannot be taken from you. Then you can pursue excellence without being owned by it.

An hourglass is such a simple visual. But man, the message behind it is powerful. Wake Forest basketball opened practice with an hourglass sitting on the floor. The reminder: Your sand is moving. This season will go faster than you think. So embrace the hard. Cherish the reps. Enjoy the bus rides. Appreciate the people. Don’t wish it away. And most importantly: Be where your feet are.

Rick Pitino was asked what stops people from being great. His answer was one word. "Ego stops greatness. I call it edging greatness out." "In a spiritual sense, ego is edging God out. But ego is edging greatness out." And he made a key distinction: "I'm not talking about confidence. You have to be a confident person." "But ego really gets you to where you think you've arrived. You think you know it all. You stop learning. You stop listening." That's the trap. Confidence keeps you hungry. Ego convinces you that you've already made it. You lose your hunger and humility. "Learning and listening are important for great leaders. Great leaders have to listen and they have to continue to learn and surround themselves with people that are better than them." EGO = Edging Greatness Out The moment you think you've arrived is the moment you stop growing. Stay confident. Stay humble. Never stop learning. (🎥@LewisHowes)

Clip from earlier this year with @BStulberg on caring deeply and giving things your all. This idea went on to be one of the most resonant in his new book, The Way of Excellence, and is shaping conversations in sport, the arts, and more. Try hard. Care deeply. Keep going.

You don’t need to be the finished product today. Respect the process, commit to progress, and keep getting better—incrementally, systematically, and progressively.
