How do we support our farmers/communities facing drought and upcoming misery due to El Nino? Loss & damage reparation paid by those who run ethanol plants, sugar cane and other water-intensive, climate emission heavy operations is the only way forward. Not charity. Not taxes.
"Find 1 kg of soybean in my ruined field, and I'll give you a quintal of cashews."
Enraged by footage of government officials casually snacking on dry fruits during a drought review meeting, Nanded farmer Atmaram Tekale issued this bitter challenge from his completely destroyed 1.5-acre farm. It’s a devastating reality check that exposes the glaring disconnect between struggling farmers losing their livelihoods and the politicians pretending to care.

“We are now in a supercharged El Niño,” explains PIK Director Johan Rockström, stating that even more extreme events could lie ahead in the coming months. This can already be felt in extreme events in tropical regions. youtube.com/watch?v=j_lNH2df…

This at a time when scientists are repeatedly warning against impacts of Super El Nino for India where marine heat, surface heat, water scarcity are all growing preparing a fertile ground for drought and unimaginable misery. Yet, our "growth" policy will remain unchanged.
Our HEAL webzine's 2nd issue is now live! In our search of solutions for planetary health, this time we bring stories of impactful work from Kashmir to Coimbatore via Assam, Thar and UP. Big 👍🏽to grassroots reporters that go an extra mile for us.

Kamal Mitra Chenoy, who formerly taught at the Centre for Comparative Politics and Political Theory, School of International Studies, JNU, recently passed away.
In remembrance of his long and valued association with EPW, we revisit some of his published work in the EPW archive.
Wishing you a new life of hope, progress and joy, Prof Chenoy! You were a friend and mentor to many, always the one who embodied solidarity with people's struggle for justice. Rest in peace!
RIP Kamal Mitra Chenoy
Deeply saddened by the passing of Kamal Mitra Chenoy, an old friend, colleague and one of JNU’s most enduring voices of dissent.
When I arrived at JNU as a student, Kamal had already begun teaching at a Delhi college. We subsequently became colleagues, sharing decades of intellectual engagement, argument and occasional agreement.
We disagreed fundamentally on politics. Kamal was firmly rooted in the CPI and the organised Left; I belonged to the Free Thinkers. But our differences never diminished mutual respect or affection; and he visited our Srinagar home several times.
Kamal remained, in many ways, a student activist all his life. Whether in the JNUTA or in larger political battles, his convictions never wavered. His idealism was infectious, his passion for causes he believed in inexhaustible, and his willingness to stand up for them unwavering.
I just spoke to his wife and comrade for life, Professor Anuradha Mitra Chenoy, and his brother, Dilip Chenoy, who spoke movingly of Kamal’s extraordinary resilience. It was perhaps his defining quality: an indomitable spirit, sustained by idealism, conviction and a refusal to give up, even in adversity.
Behind the fierce political convictions was also a man deeply proud of his remarkable family history, its contribution to modern India, and his Jewish heritage.
We belonged to different ideological worlds, but shared a university, a history, and a belief that ideas mattered.
Farewell, Kamal. We argued, we disagreed, but we never stopped talking. That, too, was the JNU we cherished.
Do read this amazing report on how Sarat Dehuri created a biodiversity register for his entire village. A biodiversity register is where people's intimate knowledge of their environment translate into action.

@careiiserpune
Sarat Dehuri may not know his exact age, but he holds an entire living forest in his mind.
A member of the Bhumij tribe, Dehuri is actively mapping his forest biodiversity and creating a village-level ecological register.
Your Sunday read in HEAL.

Congratulations to Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai for the 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, "for the discovery of non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis."
And this story has a boy from Pune in it....
Kagan's half began in 1986. He showed that a catalyst carrying only a small excess of one handedness can produce a product with a much larger excess. The small imbalance does not stay small.
Soai's half came in 1995: a reaction that makes more of itself, and prefers its own mirror image. By 2003 he reported a version that produced only one hand.
A tiny imbalance, amplified until one mirror image dominates. Extraordinary, and for about 25 years the machinery behind it resisted explanation. Many models were proposed. None stuck.
Then a boy from Pune decided the unexplained part was the only part worth doing.
Soumitra Athavale grew up in Pune, studied chemistry and biology at IISER Pune, and went to the University of Illinois in 2014 for a PhD in molecular and cell biology.
But he could not let the Soai mystery go. So he started cold emailing organic chemistry profs, asking to work on this one puzzle. Professor Scott Denmark met him, said yes, and found the money.
In 2020, Athavale was 1st author of the Nature Chemistry paper with Adam Simon, Kendall Houk and Denmark that gave the reaction the structural picture that stuck: a homochiral tetrameric catalyst, working almost like an enzyme, explaining the amplification the field had chased for a quarter century.
Denmark says students like Soumitra come along once or twice in an academic career.
The man who found the reaction is Japanese. The man who helped explain it was born in Pune.
Congratulations again to Kagan and Soai. And here is to Soumitra Athavale, the Indian who went looking for the mystery everyone else had learned to live with.
