TMSI has been studying the oceans since the 90s! The marine realm takes up more than 70% of the planet’s surface, a source of biodiversity & key to planetary carbon and heat cycling. Follow us as we bring you updates from the field! #scicomm #marine #oceans #research #science

The thirst for listening to the glacier music never ends. Collected diverse sound data from 1-hydrophone recorders and line arrays (ie, hydrophones on a line) at 2 contrasting glaciers in Hornsund, over different ice conditions. These tangles can get tricky, but we managed. (1/2)

ARL is at the Arctic ! Our researchers are at Hornsund fjord, Svalbard, making acoustic measurements at the glaciers. This will help in perfecting our technique to monitor how fast they are melting.
Our glacier acoustics research campaign at Polish Polar station, Hornsund, has been going excitingly so far ! Managed to do a boat ride to the beautiful Hans glacier and deploy a vertical array of hydrophones in the bay and spy on the glacier, along with @oscar_snoopy (1/2)

After many months of prep, I've finally arrived at Longyearbyen- the world's northernmost settlement with a population more than 1k. I'm nearly 10,000 km away from home and ~1310 km away from the North Pole. All ready to 'dive' into my glacier acoustics research! (1/2)

As we celebrate World Ocean Day, let's look at the natural gems in our region, and the challenges they face, such as pollution, overfishing, and habitat destruction. Happy World Ocean Day! #WorldOceanDay #OceanConservation #SoutheastAsia #oceans Source: @ADBEnvironment

Research from our lab on the underwater sound of melting glaciers has once again been featured in Straits Times, and is part of an exhibit at the Art Science museum exhibition Sensory Odyssey. If you are around in Singapore, dont miss the exhibition !

Researchers from TMSI and @lkcnhm are out in Sentosa this week for surveys of the island's manmade lagoons! This is part of an expedition involving staff and volunteers from Resorts World Sentosa and Sentosa Development Corporation.

The survey aims to identify areas with interesting or valuable biodiversity 🐚🪸🪼 We doorstop Dr Nicholas Yap, one of TMSI's marine biologists, for his thoughts on why such studies are important!

The crab has distinctive long spines that look like horns on its crown. It is the spines on the shell of the back of the crab that are most reminiscent of the horns on Hela’s headgear of choice (see arrow in the 2nd image).

The species, Samadinia hela, was named after the @marvel supervillain Hela, the Asgardian goddess of death. Scientists believe that this species is likely a scavenger! The character was famously portrayed on film by actress Cate Blanchett, who is also Australian.

Does art imitate life or the other way round?🦀 Our researcher Dr Lee Bee Yan and her collaborator from Queensland, Australia, Dr Peter Davie, recently published a paper on a new species of deep-sea spider crab found in about 240m deep waters off Queensland.

"You think those bird acousticians in there are listening to us?" "Definitely." "Well maybe we should mess with them a little bit then.." Just another day of bird biodiversity right outside my lab at @nustmsi . Spotted a bunch of long-tailed parakeets having a party.

After my participation in this STEM panel, I've been featured on IEEE’s @TryEngineering spotlight! Grateful for this opportunity to spread the word on importance of hands-on ocean education initiatives during the ongoing UN Decade, including our @sauvcsg tryengineering.org/news/volu…
Our panel with IEEE Society representatives are talking about why they value pre-university STEM Outreach, how they engage in STEM Outreach, and what has been most successful for them. Check it out! bit.ly/3Fve9jW #IEEE #STEM #STEMsummit
