tweeting about stuff nobody’s really interested in is a political 👏🏾 act 👏🏾

ok, here’s my contrarian take: the new version of “tim” is great, but i prefer it to sound like it’s from 1985! this doesn’t just “improve” the mix, it also scrapes off the era to make it sound like no particular time at all, which … i dunno

admittedly i’m part of the minority with really fond feelings about the sound of 80s ’wavers, but if we start looking at stylistic choices of the past (even regretted ones) as impediments to hearing some “real” “true” underlying essence, what are we even doing here, recordingwise

pleasantly surprised to encounter a guy cruising around chicago’s wicker park with his windows down absolutely blasting … “windowlicker”

sorry to be gen x about this but i feel like whenever someone is celebrated for having *newsworthy* levels of vim, confidence, and vocal self-belief, that is an obvious and reliable sign that they are not a normal person who acts normal!

After much consideration I’ve decided to just enjoy the fight between my employer (the Times) and the main thing I watch on TV (Only Connect). If I play this right maybe they’ll both try to curry favor by buying me stuff and taking me out for ice cream

lot of great writing on O’Connor, but … also a lot that seems to think it’s kind to embrace her as a symbolic pop-culture figure while mostly ignoring all the songs she wrote and performed in her day job as a musician

i recognize that this tweet replicates this problem by commenting on her pop-culture reception, but it would cost $8 to get enough characters to share my annoying theory of her as an opposite morrissey who saw outside of herself and not just in

although i will share her singing “mandinka” with two thirds of the other smiths! youtu.be/XXee0_wJeNw

(a side thing i would love to read about is the complex level of identification the Irish often have with blackness / the colonized and indigenous in general, and, you know, related stuff in this career!)

People today get WAY too much mileage out of being cooler and more enlightened than the median wisdom of previous decades. That is a low-ass bar!!! If you can’t beat the median wisdom of today you should at LEAST go up against the cooler, more enlightened people from the past

People are being so begrudging in their assessments of Kundera! Let me just throw in a tiny to-his-credit and note that, as of the late 1970s, his riff on the graphomaniac taxi driver could already sense how the internet would work

I think people have retconned the history of indierock to be more male than it actually was, in order to create a narrative of progress. This is annoying less because it's unfair (it was indeed dude-dominated) and more because it requires ignoring all the women who WERE there

Those women are, in fact, STILL here, and not just the Kim & Kim & Georgia Hubley and whanot. Thalia Zedek makes records. Tara Jane O'Neil makes records. Jean Smith and Mecca Normal make records. (Haha parents will be all too aware that Elizabeth Mitchell from Ida is doin great)

I meant to finish this thread this morning but got busy! Just imagine like 10-20 boring tweets where I shout out Kicking Giant or the Yips (or argue that a lot of today's popular women on indie labels are in a lane that, 30 years ago, was occupied by lots of women on *majors*)
