There is an (unpatchable?) supply-chain zero-day in PyTorch autograd that allows a regularization term to use the model's weights as RAM and SGD as its CPU clock to run any computation during training.

The impression I get from the AI maximalists is that if we're ever contacted by aliens, we should expect that we'll actually be talking to their version of Claude, and that the actual aliens will be watching alien fashion videos and won't understand how or why we were contacted.

Marx failed to consider that the workers are chuds who deserve to be oppressed, but the capitalists failed to consider that the bourgeoisie are fucking morons and don’t deserve to oppress anyone. We must create a third class to oppress them both.

a good programmer who stops programming for a year can extrapolate from their own cognitive decline to know what happened to e.g. Steve Huffman

a relatively easy way to improve as a beginner or intermediate programmer is to write more tests and assertions. they'll make you write a lot more code and force thinking about edge cases

kind of dark that one of the major tells of AI writing is being scrupulous about what the evidence does and doesn't demonstrate

Loss is the normal, default state of information. For information to be preserved, it requires either an unbroken chain of individuals and institutions who find it relevant to their projects to preserve, publish, translate, discuss, etc. or rare lucky finds to repair gaps
Paraphrasing again here, but still thinking about @SamoBurja point that we have written fragments from only 13% of the ~2,000 ancient Greek authors we know by name. And that's just what was written down, not counting the immense amounts of tacit knowledge lost forever. Makes you wonder how many breakthroughs civilizations have discovered, lost, then rediscovered throughout history. How much further along would humans be if none if it had to be reinvented? Or maybe the reinventing is the whole point? A new civilization being handed all the answers wouldn't be the same as one that figures it out on its own

i regret to inform you that personal growth rarely comes from acquiring new knowledge and almost always from: -getting humiliated -showing up terrified and doing it anyway -admitting you might be the problem

Replying to @Lethain
We stopped trying to evaluate the AI skill directly. Now we ask managers to walk us through the last thing they shipped with AI — what they delegated, what they checked by hand, and what broke. Tells you everything in about five minutes.

steve jobs and robert moses would do this too, it's a habit of highly effective people that no one is brave enough to write a book about
One of Bismarck’s trademark habits was to openly weep and wail and threaten to resign, harm or kill himself when he was not getting his way with the Kaiser. He would genuinely throw tantrums and cry and on one such occasion walked up to an open window and threatened to jump.

These are attacks for which the Ukrainians received no warning through the normal notification and against which their interceptors have been limited by starlink.
A horrific Russian strike in the Kharkiv region. A “shahed” struck people directly – in a park near an ordinary café. Pure atrocity. Six people were killed, including children. A little girl was killed in a stroller – her name was Angelina, she was just over a year old, born in August 2025… Her mother’s name was Inna. She died in the hospital… Another girl who was killed was 11 years old. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Another 14 people were injured, including six more children. I am grateful to everyone who supports Ukraine under these circumstances and helps us shoot down “shaheds,” shoot down missiles, and stop Russian assaults. These are horrific photos, but behind them are shattered lives and the truth about this war. Lives must be protected. Ukraine needs air defense. You can't think about making money with Russia as long as it continues its asinine war. We ask that sanctions on Russia stay in place as long as the killings continue. We ask America to be strong, and we ask it to apply the Lindsey Graham law. We ask Europe to continue its support. We ask that everything possible be done to bring peace and guarantee security. Ukraine wants peace. It is Russia that has insisted on continuing the killing all this time. The world has enough strength to stop the war. That strength must finally be used – against the murderers.
