This August, on average, every GCSE, AS and A level student in England was awarded one wrong grade. These wrong grades can't be corrected by an appeal. This has been happening for years. Why? @aoconnell @itsjamestapper @CommonsEd @Appg_Schools @tes

Is Ofqual exploiting a governance void, doing as it pleases whilst escaping oversight from the DfE and the Education Select Committee? My thanks to Oliver Sullivan and all @TeachingTimes!

My thanks to @DanWorth and @TES for publishing this piece about the accountability - or lack of it - of Ofsted and Ofqual too. Is this, in reality, an accountability and governance void? @CommonsEd @itsjamestapper @aoconnell @HMC_Org @ASCL_UK @SFCA_info tes.com/magazine/analysis/ge…
3 questions were recently tabled about exam marking, grading and appeals

Does the DfE not care that ~40,000 GCSE English Language students were wrongly 'awarded' grade 3 'fail', with no appeal?

This year, ~1.3 M students in England were awarded a total of ~6.6 M GCSE, AS and A level grades. Of which ~1.6 M were wrong. An average of about ONE WRONG GRADE AWARDED TO EVERY STUDENT IN THE LAND. None of these wrong grades can be corrected by a challenge. Is this fair?
How accurate are #GCSE & #Alevel grades? Drawing on Ofqual research, Dennis Sherwood – @noookophile – examines marking consistency, grade reliability & the fact that more than one grade can be a legitimate reflection of a student's performance: ow.ly/oh3w50ZLzvi #exams

Breaking a recent break in posting @FrankStanChat stuff on here, but this week's chat with Prof Mick Waters is just great and needs a decent audience. Covers lack of progress in maths at KS3, The Open School movement and seven signs of ethical collapse. youtu.be/c31gqVNMygI
Did you know that, of the ~6.6 million GCSE, AS and A level grades just awarded, ~1.6 million were wrong? Since there were ~1.3 million candidates, that's an average of ~ONE WRONG GRADE FOR EVERY CANDIDATE IN THE LAND. Even worse - none can be corrected by an appeal. @CommonsEd

Who is telling the truth about exam grades? Is it Dame Glenys Stacey (2 Sept 2020)? Dr Jo Saxton (29 June 2023)? Or (now Sir) Nick Gibb (13 July 2023 - he was asked to reply in writing, but never did)?

Thank you @jonathansamuels, Zak Simpson, and @SkyNews for inviting me to talk about the ~40,000 GCSE Eng Lang students in England just awarded grade 3, 'fail', but who merited grade 4, 'pass', with no right of appeal. @ObserverUK @itsjamestapper @commonsed

Great that the article about the 40,000 GCSE English Language students who truly merited grade 4, 'pass', but were awarded grade 3 'fail', with no right of appeal, is the lead item on @ObserverUK's 'news' front page! observer.co.uk/news
@itsjamestapper @miss_mcinerney @TES
GCSE, AS and A level grades are a lottery - to quote Ofqual's website "more than one grade could well be a legitimate reflection of a student's performance" (11/8/19). This lottery does real damage. These 40,000 students who merited grade 4 but got grade 3 are the latest victims.
Nearly 40,000 pupils forced to resit GCSE English because of who marked their paper bit.ly/3SRjco2
Last Thursday, ~40,000 young people in England had their futures destroyed not because they don't know their grammar, but because Ofqual is failing in its statutory duty "to secure that regulated qualifications give a reliable indication of knowledge, skills and understanding".
New research suggests many thousands of children could have passed the exam if their grades had been awarded by senior examiners

That 40,000 young people who truly merited grade 4, 'pass' were awarded grade 3 'fail' is a tragedy for each of the victims. That there is no right of appeal is pernicious. Why are so many wrong grades 'awarded' in the first place? And why is the right of appeal denied? @DanWorth

~40,000 GCSE Eng Lang students who truly merited grade 4 'pass' were wrongly awarded grade 3 'fail' last Thursday. Without right of appeal. Outrageous.

My thanks to @DanWorth and all @tes for publishing my piece today about the financial penalty potentially suffered by A level students 'awarded' a grade lower than they truly merit, just because Ofqual's grades are only "reliable to one grade either way"

"Dennis Sherwood skewers the shambles that is Ofqual." Thank you, Andrew Cobb of Bath, for your letter in today's Observer commenting on my article of 7 June!
