In September 1928 Alexander Fleming returned from holiday to a curious sight. He saw that bacteria he had been growing on a culture plate had been killed in an area close to where a mould was accidentally growing. It was to be a monumental discovery – Alexander Fleming had just discovered penicillin. He isolated the mould and showed that it released a substance that inhibited bacterial growth. He named the substance penicillin after the name of the mould. Fleming reported his ground-breaking results in the scientific paper 'On the antibacterial action of cultures of a Penicillium with special reference to their use in the isolation of B. influenzae', published in British Journal of Experimental Pathology in 1929. More revisionist history from Netflix. In their new Unabomber movie, the main investigator of the case is an FBI agent named Joanne Miller, played by Shailene Woodley, who spends the film battling institutional sexism. In reality, there was no lead female FBI agent working the case. The lead agents were James R. Fitzgerald, Terry Turchie, and Jim Freeman​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​. The only real significant female in the entire case is Kaczynski’s sister-in-law who recognized his writing when his manifesto came out and convinced her husband to report him to the FBI, which led to his capture. Shailene Woodley’s character is completely made up by Netflix to inject feminism and female empowerment. Thank you Larry Ellison for stopping them from buying Warner Bros.
