Her father drove a bus. She went on to shape international justice. Now, Navi Pillay has won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.
Born into a poor Indian-Tamil family in apartheid-era South Africa, Navanethem “Navi” Pillay grew up witnessing racial discrimination.
With seven children to raise, her bus-driver father struggled to make ends meet.
But her circumstances did not define her future.
In 1995, she became South Africa’s first non-white woman High Court judge.
She later served on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, contributing to landmark legal recognition of rape as a potential act of genocide.
From challenging apartheid-era injustice to serving as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014, Pillay dedicated decades to defending human rights and strengthening international law.
She once said her struggles were “worth it” if she could “help someone who's helpless”. Now, her lifelong commitment to justice has earned global recognition.

This is the Indian Captain, Smit Machchhar. Remember his name. 🇮🇳
While flying 174 people from Dubai to Israel, Captain Machchhar was reportedly stabbed and seriously wounded by his co-pilot, who Israeli officials say attempted to crash the aircraft.
But Smit fought back. Despite his injuries, he resisted the attacker and managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew to overpower him. Other flydubai pilots aboard then took control and landed the plane safely in Saudi Arabia.
174 people made it out alive. Captain Smit Machchhar helped prevent a catastrophe. India should be proud of him. Israel thanks him. A true hero. 🇮🇳🇮🇱
