New Mexico has climbed 22 spots in the national higher education rankings, from #40 in 2019 to #18 today.
That progress reflects a bigger commitment: making education affordable at every stage of life.
In New Mexico, there is no wrong door to opportunity. Whether your future includes a college degree, an apprenticeship, a trade or workforce training, we’re creating more pathways to help you get there.

A strong economy starts with giving New Mexicans more paths to opportunity.
More than 41,000 students are using the Opportunity Scholarship to pursue college, trades and apprenticeships. Families are saving an average of $13,000 per child each year with universal, no-cost child care. And we’re investing in New Mexico businesses while growing industries like advanced manufacturing and quantum.
Whether you’re earning a degree, learning a trade, raising a family or building a business, you should have the freedom to choose the path that works for you.
That’s how we build stronger careers, stronger families and lasting economic security.

Across the nation, college tuition has climbed sharply — driven by inflation, construction costs, and years of declining state investment. It’s a different story in New Mexico, where tuition is FREE to residents— part-time, full-time, any time. Some students attending New Mexico schools, such as out of state or graduate students, would still be adversely affected by tuition hikes. Our investment is paying off with overall enrollment up more than 13% since 2022 and freshman enrollment up more than 18%! Students are choosing New Mexico and staying here after graduation. It’s a great return on our investment.

Our state and nation are facing a nursing shortage, and Trump’s Department of Education now says nursing isn’t a “professional degree,” cutting students off from federal grants and loans. What?!
This decision is not just boneheaded — it’s dangerous— and it carries more than a whiff of sexism, given that 88 percent of nurses are women.
In New Mexico, we know the truth: Nurses are the backbone of our health care system. They save lives and support families. That’s why we’re lifting nurses up and supporting them instead of tearing them down.
Here’s how we invest in our New Mexico nurses:
🔵Up to $25,000 in student loan repayment for nurses who serve in the communities that need them most.
🔵Nursing Loan-for-Service Program that forgives up to 100% of loans when graduates stay and work in certain areas of New Mexico.
🔵Nursing Excellence Fund grants through the New Mexico Board of Nursing that help new nurses build strong, lasting careers right here at home.
To every nurse in our state: We value you. We need you. And we’re not going to let anyone diminish the profession you’ve dedicated your life to. @nmhighered

The president is threatening to dismantle the Department of #Education and slash more than $120M from our higher-ed system but, rest assured, #NewMexico will keep protecting student aid, supporting our colleges and ensuring higher education remains accessible for all. Investment in public schools and colleges is fundamental to our state's success, and four years of consecutive higher education enrollment growth bodes well for New Mexico’s future. #AmericanEducationWeek

New Mexicans will receive full November SNAP benefits.
Yesterday, after receiving guidance from the USDA, New Mexico sent full November SNAP benefits to all eligible New Mexicans. We won’t stand by while the President works to deny food to hungry children, families and seniors
The state loaded federal SNAP food benefits to eligible New Mexicans’ EBT cards following an initial Rhode Island federal court order and subsequent guidance from the USDA. Eligible New Mexicans will see food benefits on their EBT cards on their regular issuance date. While the Supreme Court later stayed that order, New Mexico families already had full access to 100% of their full November benefits.
Families can use the funds loaded on EBT cards.
Approximately 460,000 New Mexicans rely on SNAP each month for food assistance. The program also generates economic activity, producing up to $1.80 in local economic benefits for every SNAP dollar spent.
The second special legislative session is moving forward on Monday because Republicans in Congress have not ended this needless federal government shutdown.
We cannot leave New Mexicans at the mercy of federal dysfunction. This special session will give us the tools to feed families if Republicans in Congress fail them again. We're not waiting around to find out.
