As Mother Jones prepared to publish an investigation about allegations of physical abuse against three women by Ohio Republican Rep. Max Miller, his crisis communications adviser warned @abbyvesoulis that Miller has “many defamation lawyers.”
The possible implication seemed clear: Publish a story that reflected poorly on Miller and potentially face legal consequences. motherjones.com/politics/202…
Some key points from this investigation:
-David Flippo's biggest known asset is a company that resembles SEC criteria for a likely "scam"
-He appeared to represent its interests at pitch meetings
-The company and co-founders spent lavishly on his behalf

We still don’t know where the $1.6M that David Flippo claims to have lent his campaign really came from.
But @NLenard found that his campaign has benefitted enormously from a company that has the hallmarks of a scam, and from the company’s co-founder, who been accused of fraud.
New: David Flippo’s largest known asset is in a company co-founded by an accused fraudster.
The firm and its associates have funneled hundreds of thousands to Flippo’s campaign and pro-Flippo groups.

Good story, but note who is in the Facebook photo: campaign manager Rory McShane and federally accused fraudster Leo Blundo. David Flippo has close ties to accused fraudster whose company spent lavishly on his behalf motherjones.com/politics/202… via @MotherJones

One of Flippo's biggest assets, Arizona Land Reserve, was formed early last year by some of his top fundraisers, per @nlanard:

A person listed in FEC records as a major donor to David Flippo’s campaign told Mother Jones they did not donate anything to Flippo—let alone the thousands of dollars attributed to them.
That “suggests very serious campaign finance violations."

Last week, we published a story with the headline: "David Flippo Blamed Staff For Exaggerating His Military Record. His Own Hat Tells a Different Story."
Now Flippo tells NPR his grandkids are responsible for him repeatedly wearing a hat that misrepresents his military record.

Flippo and his campaign have not responded to queries about the significance of the two mini "V"-shaped symbols seen on the side of Flippo's veteran hat.
You can read more about the situation here:

As caught by @tabitha_mueller, David Flippo's website was just updated to replace an image of him wearing a hat veterans say he used to falsely suggest he received a Bronze Star with valor.
The original photo can still be found buried on his site here: flippo4nv.com/wp-content/upl…
The original explanation was that his staff made a mistake by falsely claiming he had a Bronze Star with valor.
Then he and his campaign were asked about Flippo himself wearing a hat on numerous occasions that suggested he earned the award.

I asked Flippo's campaign about the V-shaped emblems on Tuesday. They did not respond.
The hat was first written about here by @BrutalBrittany2

👀 GOP CD2 candidate David Flippo changed his main website photo from one of him wearing a hat with his Bronze Star and two "V" shaped pins on the side (left) to one of him hatless (right).
Comes after reporting on his exaggerated military record claims

After it was reported last week that David Flippo's campaign falsely claimed he received a Bronze Star with valor, Flippo said his staff made the mistakes.
The problem? For years, Flippo wore a hat that suggested he earned the award.
