Specific aspects of the Jim Crow situation made dramatic confrontations to raise the stakes a smart strategy to pursue, it's foolish to assume that this logic will apply generally.

Blinder & Watson (2016) found that there is superior economic performance under Democratic Party presidents thanks to fewer wars and energy shocks, which they seem to characterize as dumb luck or something but IMO reflects a genuine pattern.

IMO this is pretty clearly a joint decision by both Elon Musk and the White House to deliberately cripple the Ukrainian war effort. I think they’re both deflecting and blaming others because they know this is a despicable act which is resulting in civilians dying and assists the Russians in their genocidal war of conquest.
"Elon Musk ordered the slowdown of a military-grade version of Starlink relied on by Ukraine, a decision that sparked panic in Kyiv and confusion inside the Trump administration, U.S. officials and people familiar with the matter said.
Both Musk and President Trump have expressed anger at Ukraine for attacking Russian diesel refineries in recent weeks, which the president blames for high energy prices. Last week, Musk capped the speeds at which Ukrainian hardware could stay connected to the satellite-based network, the people said, rendering some offensive drones and interceptor drones virtually useless."

Did you know ICE can't be sued for defamation even if it intentionally spreads falsehoods about a person with actual malice to destroy their reputation? Now that you know, are you more or less likely to believe what they say?
Replying to @mjfree
FACT CHECK. On October 17, 2026, ICE conducted a targeted enforcement operation in Long Beach, California to arrest an at-large criminal illegal alien. During the operation, anti-ICE agitators attempted to impede operations, threaten officers, and damage government vehicles despite officers giving lawful commands. Officers followed their training and used the minimum amount of force.
ICE did NOT hit an individual on a bike. An individual was arrested after he smashed the mirror of a government vehicle. Resisting arrest is dangerous and can result in injury.
The rioter was transferred to the custody of local police, and we are investigating potential charges for the damage to a government vehicle.
ICE law enforcement officers are trained to use the minimum amount of force necessary to resolve dangerous situations to prioritize the safety of the public and our officers. Officers are highly trained in de-escalation tactics and regularly receive ongoing use of force training. The latest ICE use of force policy is available here.
We have seen a highly coordinated campaign of violence against our law enforcement. Our brave law enforcement is facing more than a 1,600% increase in assaults, 3,300% increase in vehicular attacks, and an 8,000% increase in death threats against them. This violence must end. Anybody who lays a hand on our officers or tries to obstruct them is committing a felony and a federal crime.

Much more of my feed yesterday was dedicated to (disgraceful) rioting in France than large peaceful demonstrations in the country where I actually live.
Appears to be absolutely MASSIVE protests all across the US yesterday and this platform is so skewed to the Trump/Putin side that this is the first I've seen or heard of it.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The montage uses recycled footage from larger 2025 and March 2026 No Kings protests, not Oct 17 2026 Vote Early events. Those were smaller localized gatherings (hundreds to thousands per city) focused on early voting, not the massive crowds shown.

20,000? Remember just months ago when DHS told Nevada it found 15,903 noncitizens on its voter rolls, then when pushed, said, okay, we admit we’re not sure about them all, but here’s 185 we know are noncitizens — but they were ALL CITIZENS?
You guys have no credibility!
The Department of Justice sent a list to California election officials of more than 20,000 individuals who @USCIS and @HSI_HQ identified are likely noncitizens and who are on California’s voter rolls. This is of serious concern because California automatically mails ballots to every active registered voter on its voter rolls, whether a voter has requested a mail ballot or not.
We provided California an opportunity to self correct its records and we requested that it segregate the suspected illegal ballots for the upcoming election. California has refused to comply and intends to facilitate noncitizens in voting, which is a violation of federal law.
So, today we filed an emergency court action against California seeking to ensure that noncitizens who received ballots in California do NOT vote in the upcoming election. Election integrity is a top priority for Americans and the Justice Department.

It’s under-discussed that:
1. Trump and his supporters are obsessed with immigration as a civilization-defining issue
2. They haven’t tried to pass an immigration bill of any kind

Margaret Hamilton has died. Absolute legend, it was my honour to meet her and have a conversation with her just a few years ago, super nice and still sharp. Ave atque vale Margaret.

What isn't surprising: work requirements are reducing coverage because of paperwork burdens
What is surprising: apparently The Pitt had a storyline that demonstrated the difficulty of navigating Medicaid redeterminations
Nebraska, the 1st state to start Medicaid work reporting requirements, released data on the 1st few mos.
Over 1,000 people lost/were denied coverage - the vast majority NOT bcuz they’re not working but bcuz of red tape and process failures.

After initially claiming it was 16K, DHS sent Nevada a list of 185 people it claimed were noncitizens illegally registered to vote, and every single one of them turned out to be a US citizen. DHS certainly isn't too concerned about disenfranchising Americans.

Some thoughts on the Navier-Stokes news from a professor of aerospace engineering:
1) take a deep breath
2) posts indicating we "solved Navier-Stokes" are incorrect and overblown. A very specific mathematical proof involving a niche scenario for Navier-Stokes has *potentially* been shown (that a perfectly smooth incompressible initial condition with finite energy could produce a singularity--note the assumptions here piled on to an equation set that already involves some assumptions).
3) there is no general closed form solution for N-S and that's not what this news is about
4) this is more of a mathematical curiosity than anything else and could matter a lot to mathematicians but basically changes nothing in the way N-S are used in practice
5) there are already very useful exact solutions to Navier-Stokes that greatly simplify the equation set with the right boundary conditions/geometry like laminar flow through a pipe or a 2D Taylor-Green vortex
6) in aerospace, we already treat N-S as an approximation in many instances and are well aware of its limitations. we don't outright solve these equations anyway and regularly chop off terms or simplify parts (at the expense of accuracy) to make them easier to deal with.
7) to be honest I have never found this specific problem to be particularly interesting because we know a core assumption of N-S is a "continuum" fluid where you ignore molecules and assume hydrodynamic scales >>> molecular scales. We know a real fluid cannot have infinite velocity or energy. But clearly you can push equations outside of their bound of validity and make them produce funky results and singularities.
We’re sharing a solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize Problem, one of the deepest problems at the frontier of mathematics.
The proof was produced by a group of agents, using an OpenAI next-generation model significantly more capable than GPT-6 Astra.
The problem concerns whether the description of smooth three-dimensional fluid motion modeled by the Navier-Stokes equations can break down. It has remained unresolved for roughly 90 years.

"Embrace an authoritarian who routinely bashes Democrats and regularly praises totalitarian regimes, or else you're a ZIONIST"
Why are Democrats being asked to swallow this obvious dogshit
Pikergate is one of the most annoying things in our online discourse and it's a totally self-inflicted wound for Democrats. People don't have to like Piker or agree with him. But that's the point of a big tent. There are Democrats who support what Israel did in Gaza and don't seem bothered by large numbers of civilians being killed or the deliberate attempt (as stated explicitly by Israeli leaders) to make Gaza uninhabitable, which seems to me to be worse than anything Piker has said.
What makes it worse is that they're in positions of power and have used their power to provide cover for Israel's atrocities. But no one is saying that they shouldn't or can't be Democrats. Some of them are leading figures in the party. That's just the way it's going to be, as much as we might dislike it.
Piker's most objectionable remark in recent weeks has been not too different from what @neeratanden has said about Netanyahu's actions making Jews in America less safe (see below). It's an obvious point to make. If people who claim to speak in the name of a religion do awful things it endangers members of that religious community. Just like how when Muslim extremists commit horrific acts in the name of Islam, it endangers Muslims. This isn't rocket science.
But somehow Piker is seen as disqualifiable. It just doesn't make much sense to me. But "moderate" Democrats (who are actually out of step with the median voter on Israel-Palestine) have made Piker into the be-all and end-all of inter-factional fights, and they've hurt their own party in the process by putting the attention on Piker when the attention presumably should be put on beating Republicans.

Q: You’ve been Republicans for most of your voting lives. Who’s voting for James Talarico?
Republican moms: *all raise their hands*
“I like him. He was a middle school teacher in a public school in Texas, and they started cutting all his funding and he said, ‘Well, if I can’t change my school, then I’m gonna need to change my state.’ And that’s so becoming of a leader.
I want a middle school teacher who’s like, hey, this is broken. Somebody needs to fix it. Why not me?”
“This is not what I signed up for. Give me somebody who’s not extremist. I don’t care what party they are. I’m going to vote for whoever is the most common sense and who I think would be the most likely to protect my kids.”
“You’re never going to vote for a candidate that thinks exactly like you… You need to get on the bus that’s driving closest to where you want to end up. Talarico, I find him to be pretty moderate, and I think that is telling of what’s happening in the state of Texas. The Republicans should be worried.”
