How does @Wise make money? 0.58% per transfer. But the real model is the architecture. No funds actually cross borders. Wise debits your account locally and credits the recipient from their local pool in the destination country. Correspondent banking bypassed. Real interbank rate. Margin kept. £145B in volume. 15.6M customers. £21.5B in float. Banks paying to license their rails. 💰 FY2025 : £1.2B revenue. 21% profit margin. The real question : build or license. Product or infrastructure. That decision will define the next decade in financial services. #wise #payments #fintech #banking @harshsinha @nilanp @kaarmann

Now that we're soon running out of 32-bit namespace for transfer IDs at @Wise, the engineers are annoyed with me choosing int over long when I wrote the first lines of code in 2010. But why don't they appreciate the $17 of savings in storage cost over years!? 🤷

@terrencetaos post on the death of small organisations mathstodon.xyz/@tao/11525994… Reminded me of this post from the economist how with the creation of largery unitary authorities in the UK town councils are making a comeback as people look for more direct agency archive.is/NhscY

As of 2025, a stamp for a letter costs $0.78 in the United States. Amazon Prime sells items for less than that... with free shipping! Why send a postcard when you can send actual stuff? 🤔 If enough people do this - what point does amazon go bust (or does it run out of limes first) walzr.com/postal-arbitrage

Whatever the truth of what happened. The outcome (the gutting of the post) is sad - and this post is a paean to the world of high quality old media. I'm sure new forms of high quality news will emerge (or the few remaining high quality media outlets with higher quality biz models will thrive) - but till then theres a bit of a vacuum newyorker.com/news/annals-of…
