THE ULTIMATE @Big12Conference Football 2025 Power Rankings & Analysis- Post Spring Ball Edition A new #1 emerges in my Big-12 Football Power Rankings and I’m confident the Big 12 has 6 teams that are in FAFO mode for 2025 as it related to being disrespected last year, and no fewer than two of these will make the CFP this year. Big-12 Conference themes to watch: - Strong year expected w/ experienced QB's in the Big12 that I believe will keep the conference competitive vs SEC, B1G and ACC inter-conference matchups. - 6 multi-year starting 1,000yd RB's were just drafted into the NFL (Skattebo, Harvey, Giddens, Neal, Brooks, Gordon) who will step up to take their places... - Will Big12 successes be driven more on defense? - There are two new coaches (both returning to programs they’ve coached previously) how quickly do they reintegrate? - Several teams have been relying on the portal very heavily, and while there are some quick wins via this strategy, is there such a thing as hitting it too hard? History is beginning to show that living and dying by the portal every year can be hard on teams, especially when it comes to building continuity and team culture, which can create collateral challenges. With that said, let’s dive into the rankings. For each team, I've given in a ranking between 1st -16th and typed up an Overview analysis, Transfer portal update on key Additions and Departures, Offensive expectations, Defensive expectations, Schedule overview and then final quick summary of my expectation for the season with a projected record. I’ve tried my best to give a comprehensive analysis and be as objective as possible. Feel free to chime in with feedback on your individual team’s review, I’d love to hear any and all rebuttals and/or what I might be missing. I'll provide my next update about a week before the season starts in late August. @ArizonaFBall @ASUFootball @BUFootball @BYUfootball @GoBearcatsFB @CUBuffsFootball @UCF_Football @UHCougarFB @CycloneFB @KU_Football @KStateFB @CowboyFB @TCUFootball @TexasTechFB @Utah_Football @WVUfootball #CollegeFootball #CFP @SEC @B1Gfootball @ACCFootball

Fun fact, there are 20 P4 teams that have not played a True Non-Con Away Game more than 1000 miles from their home stadium in the past decade (shown here) Of those teams, 10 have played 5 or fewer of those games in that timeframe. They're all in the SEC and Big Ten.
“No one plays the SEC schedule” Yeah because your flagship programs are too chicken to come play true non-con road games west of the Mississippi. When was the last time you saw an <Insert Western US school> vs <insert flagship SEC school> Home/Home?

McCae Hillstead @mccaehillstead is likely going to become a much more important topic for @BYUFootball over the coming months. While digging through highlights of his '23 Fr. season at Utah State, I came back impressed with what I saw Lets start this🧵off with a quick intro: #GoCougs

Here are some of @mccaehillstead highlights from that season including a gave vs. a Curt Cignetti-lead James Madison team that went 11-2 and others. He throws a nice deep ball with accuracy (something that has been missing for a few seasons) ...as well as some darts as you'll see in these highlights 🧵: #GoCougs

...@mccaehillstead also has legitimate track speed and ran an official 10.98 100M as a Soph. while at Skyridge High School. That would actually make him one of the faster athletes on BYU's roster (likely top-10) Here are some of his running highlights from his Fr. season: 🧵 #GoCougs

Projected 14th Place- Cincinnati Overview: Usually, when I see a team returning a QB that threw for just under 3,000 yds the year prior, and an experienced Dontay Corleone holding down the DL, I would consider them probably in the top half of the conf. But with the loss of 1000yd rusher Kiner, and an all new WR corp, and gaps in the OL to figure out, Sorsby may be scrambling early. Transfers: 16 incoming, 15 outgoing for a total of 31, one of the smallest transfer classes in the Big 12 (I consider the lower the rank in total transfers, the better, because it probably means there will be more cohesiveness as a roster.) Key departures: WR Tony Johnson to Miami (48 rec in ’24) and Jordan Young, CB to Ark. Key pickups: OT Joe Cotton from South Dakota Offense: Incoming transfer Tawee Walker (Wis) steps in to fill the shoes of Corey Kiner. Sorsby will be hoping incoming WRs, Cyrus Allen (T A&M) and Caleb Goodie (CSU) learn the playbook early. Defense: Cincinnati was middle of the pack last year, and returns several starters but other than Corleone no real standouts. But do keep an eye on Matthew McDoom (one of the better last names in the conference)… he’s a transfer in from Coastal Carolina and had 11 PD and 3 Ints last season. Non-conference P4 games: Cincinnati starts the season off at Arrowhead Stadium in KC vs B1G Nebraska... going to be a tough task early on. Schedule: Throw in vs Iowa St., vs Baylor, @ Utah, @ TCU vs BYU on the schedule and I feel the Bearcats will have their hands full. Summary: I think Cincinnati has some talented pieces, but only enough to keep themselves out of the conference cellar. Projected record 4-8, ceiling 6-6 @GoBearcatsFB @Big12Conference

Projected 2nd Place - BYU Overview: BYU was one of the bigger surprises of the 2024 college football season… until they choked when it mattered (vs Kansas and ASU). This is all to fresh in most of their minds as they return for 2025. And when you have 19 or 20 out of 23 projected starters that were starters or played significant minutes in 2024, they will remember this. BYU has the personnel to right their mistakes, but it will all hinge upon the improvement QB Jake Retzlaff must make to take them to the next level Transfers: Very light portal class with only 11 incoming transfers and 28 outgoing 39 total. This indicates the roster is very stable, and the excessive outgoing players shows they are likely upgrading talent while purging that were likely not going to see the field. Key departures: All-American kickoff man, Keelan Marion (Miami) and Harrison Taggart (LB) to Cal. Key Additions: BYU’s defense ranked in the top 15 nationally in 2024, and #1 in the Big 12, however, their undersized defensive line was an area that struggled to create pressure at times last year. Keanu Tanuvasa, DT is a former starter at Utah and is expected to contribute immediately in a significant way. Same with 340lb Justin Kirkland, NT from Ok St will add needed size. OT Andrew Gentry comes over from Michigan and project to start if off-season surgery heals in time. Carsen Ryan, TE from Utah is projected to start. BYU also picked up two brothers from Stanford (WR Tiger and QB Bear Bachmeier) …Tiger projected to contribute immediately, while Bear may be the heir-apparent to QB Jake Retzlaff after he departs in 2026. While only a small class, it was a strategic one to fill gaps heading into the upcoming season. Offense: BYU’s offense will all hinge on returning QB Jake Retzlaff who was brilliant at times and key contributor, he also made repeated mistakes that cost the team games and possibly a playoff bid. He needs to improve his decision making and accuracy for BYU to really take that next step. LJ Martin returns for year 3 at RB, and could see his first 1000yd season if he can stay healthy. Chase Roberts is WR1 and has a ton of experience and is as sure-handed as they come. However, several other WR’s will need to emerge to assist Retzlaff but new TE Carsen Ryan looked very good during Spring. OL is a bit of a question, while they bring back several very talented starters and key rotational players, they may need some time early to all get in sync as a reworked unit. Defense: DC Jay Hill has brought some fire & grit to the BYU defensive unit it hasn’t seen since the Bronco Mendenhall years. As stated above, BYU’s defense was #1 in the Big 12 in ’24, and I believe it could actually be even better in ’25. All three starting LB’s could very well be playing on Sunday’s within the next few years. Glasker is explosive (14.5 TFLs, 3ints, 4 PDs) Kelly (10 TFLs 5 sacks and 14 QB Hurries) and newly announced starting MLB, Siale Esera may have the highest ceiling of the 3. Tanner Wall FS Tanner Wall returns with a lot of SS talent that just needs reps. Speedsters, Evan Johnson and 6’3 CB Mory Bamba were key rotational players that return to start at CB in ’25. Schedule: Actually seems to be on the softer side compared to some of the other top teams, with road games at @ Iowa St @ Tech @ Colo, with home games vs Utah and TCU Non-conf vs Stanford, but with all the transition there currently, shouldn’t be able to pull that out. Summary: I project BYU’s defense to be even more dominant in 2025 that it was in '24, will their offense catch up enough to get them the title game (and CFP) this go-round? Projected Record: 11-1 with a ceiling of 12-0 @BYUfootball @Big12Conference

Projected 1st Place team - Baylor Overview: Baylor might be the ultimate sleeper in the conf title contention run, but I'm not yet hearing a lot of pre-season hype (yet). Watching them in the first half of last year vs the last 6 games had to make Baylor loyal feel pretty good about this coming season. Similar to Iowa State, Baylor brings back the vast majority of its offense from ’24, which was cooking at the end of the season w/ Sawyer Robertson at the helm. Defense might be a little more suspect, at least on paper with 4 of the 11 starters new to the team during the ’25 season. Transfers: 15 incoming, 17 outgoing for a total of 32. Key departures: not many, safety, Corey Gordon, might be the biggest, but replaceable. Key additions: Kobe Prentice, WR from Alabama. LB Emar’rion Winston from Oregon and potential QB of the future, Walker White from Auburn. Offense: Sawyer Robertson very well could be the best QB in the Big 12, which will have a very deep group of stellar signal callers. He trailed just Shedeur Sanders in passer efficiency rating in the conference in 2024. Add in potent WRs weapons Josh Cameron and Ashtyn Hawkins both back after stellar years in ’24 as well as TE Michael Trigg and potentially the best backfield in the B12 in Bryson Washington (1,000yd rusher last year) and Dawson Pendergrass. …oh, and did I mention they also return 4 of their 5 OL? This offense is going to be scary, and I would project them as potentially the best offense in the conf, and no worse than 3rd with all the proven weapons on the roster. Defense: Aranda doesn’t love public speaking, but he sure does love defense, so you have to believe that he wasn’t thrilled with Baylors defensive performance much of last year. How well their defense plays, is how well they’ll do in their B12 title hunt. DL looks a bit undersized for a 3-4 system IMO, but Jackie Marshall looks impressive. LB room brings in three new transfer starters for ’25 including former Oregon LB Emar’rion Winston and MLB Travion Barnes who had 10.5 TFLs at FIU last year. Returning is Keaton Thomas who recorded over 100 total tackles in 2024. If there is an average group on defense, I would say it might be the secondary. 4 of 5 DB’s return and look adequate with FS Bobby Devyn and NB Carl Williams being the standouts of the group. Schedule: After a rough non-conf start, it doesn’t get much easier w/ ASU, KState, Utah at home, TCU in Ft. Worth. Non-conf: Auburn Game 1, SMU Game 2. If there’s a team that is experienced enough to begin the season like that, it’s Baylor. Summary: The more I research Baylor, the more confident I am in them making a big splash nationally. And It all starts Friday, August 29th at home vs Auburn. If they pull that out, it’s off the the races and a potential CFB Playoff appearance and Big-12 title in '25. Projected Record: 11-1 w/ a 12-0 ceiling @BUFootball @Big12Conference
