Political scientists and economists: we're looking for researchers with deep expertise to come work with us for a unique 4-month fellowship at @AnthropicAI. You'll work closely with us to evaluate, improve, and apply Claude's capabilities in your field. It's going to be extremely fun and interesting work, and definitely worth taking a short leave from your university for if you need to!

Trump saves the day for Putin. Just as Ukraine was changing the direction of the war by inflicting real economic pain on Putin by hitting his oil refineries, Trump steps in and agrees to buy Russian diesel. Now Trump can say that Ukraine is bombing American interests and they better stop. Up until today, there was a real chance of an unspoken aerial cease fire if Russian could no longer tolerate the pain, but that has now disappeared

Fields medalist Hugo Duminil-Copin on OpenAI's recent math proofs flood: "Solving problems no longer has any value. [...] We’re going to have to turn mathematics into a human science: its role will be to formalize analogies, and thus to study how humans think and abstract."

Russia's five-hospital quarantine, FSB involvement, and reported hazmat use in response to the death of a single researcher at a weapons-lineage Irkutsk lab are inconsistent with a lab-acquired plague infection, which would have been treated with prophylactic antibiotics.

Herb Simon predicted that middle managers would be the first to be automated by machines. Interestingly, that's not what seems to be happening for now. We are seeing AI exposed firms and occupations reorganize towards the middle layers, with an increase in the share of mid-seniority roles, and drops in both the junior and senior shares.
Chart crime, Sunday edition. What a horrible display.
Since 1830, technology has cut the American workweek from 69 hours to 38 while raising real income per person roughly 20-fold.
Properly managed, A.I. can do the same.

Easy no-read recommendation. Cringe in top.
🚨Breaking. There's been a pneumonic plague outbreak at a BSL-3 lab in Siberia, Russia.🚨
"Nearly 200 People Under Observation After Irkutsk Lab Worker Dies From Plague" - Moscow Times
This is fact, and also the inciting incident in my book BIOLOGICAL WAR: A SCENARIO, which is unnerving.
Will post more as I learn more, including from Russian speaking sources🧵

The good, the bad, and the ugly: HKS's @StephenLCasper breaks down Dario Amodei’s recent essay calling for the slowdown of AI.
He argues while it’s commendable that Anthropic’s CEO is “taking a stand for something,” there are some key missteps and outstanding questions.

I think you've done enough calling us paranoid and preposterous. The next step is for you to defend your position in public against someone who will push back against it. I'm happy to meet you for a debate anywhere, anytime.
You're a world-famous veteran of dozens of debates against the world's top intellectuals, and I've never argued in public before, so adjusting for the relative correctness of our positions, if you're a betting man I'm happy to put my $5000 against your $1000 (ie 5:1 odds in your favor) that I'll win by some standard of audience opinion change. Let me know if you're interested and we can hash out details.

It's not different from Naminian state officials who award infrastructure projects to China for the grand prize of a red iPhone.
The “Corruption Scandal of the Year” award may just have found its winner.
Jørgen Wæver is a Greenlandic politician. He is pictured here with his wife, Vivian Motzfeldt, who served as Greenland’s chairman for foreign affairs until March this year. She represented Greenland in the negotiations with the USA when Trump threatened to invade Greenland.
The Americans appear to be quite happy with this family as Jørgen Wæver has now received a house in Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, paid for by a group of American investors. The investors transferred USD 823,000 directly to the seller to pay for the house which Jørgen Wæver now owns.
One of the investors is Ronald Lauder whom John Bolton has identified as the person who gave Trump the idea to buy Greenland back in 2018.
Jørgen Wæver has declined to comment why he has gotten the house and what he has done or given in return for the 823,000 USD.
We can expect more of this as the USA tries to buy or bribe its way into Greenland and I am not sure we can count on the Greenlandic politicians to resist it.

The only majority that will work in the near future is Kenya. Greens, SPD, and Union have to start now figuring out how to sell that they can and will work together on important topics, while staying recognizable to their voters. The Ampel tried, but executed badly. 1/X

Economy is the most important topic. Without production neither transformation, nor defense, nor social state are affordable. Make it liberal, make it cheap for companies, give cash to losers, use new technology. Delivery the the goal of wealth and security. 2/X
The takeaway here: this BS will be called out very publicly. Yet, enough people will be attracted to this BS. Understanding why people so this (i do not), is a major skill.
5% returns don't sound exciting...
Until you run the math:
$50K account. 5% monthly.
Month 3: $57,800
Month 6: $67,000
Month 9: $77,600
Month 12: ~$89,700
You nearly doubled your money in a year.
No home runs. No 10x lottery tickets. No stress.
Just 5% a month quietly compounding while everyone else blows up chasing the exciting trade.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
5% monthly returns compound to ~80% annually and are unrealistic for consistent low-risk investing. The S&P 500 has historically returned ~10% per year on average.
