šØ NEW PODCAST: Churchill's Queen
In the final episode of the Since Attlee & Churchill Summer Book Club, @richardmarcj and I are joined by @nigelfletcher, author of Churchill's Queen: The Remarkable Friendship That Shaped Our Age, to explore the fascinating relationship between Winston Churchill and Elizabeth II.
In his book, Nigel explores how their relationship developed even before Elizabeth's accession in 1952, with Churchill playing an influential role in her early life.
And in our discussion, we explore the personal relationship between the two as Prime Minister and Sovereign, their very different ways of understanding the decline of the British Empire and the emergence of the Commonwealth, and the disagreements that punctuated their relationship ā including about the Royal Family's name and their London home.
We finish by considering how different the beginning of Elizabeth II's reign might have been if Clement Attlee had remained Prime Minister instead.
Available now wherever you get your podcasts. Just search 'Since Attlee & Churchill.'

Has the Pope crossed a line? And do British politicians have the same problem when religion and politics mix? I spoke to @NickFerrariLBC on @LBC earlier about the issues raised by the war of words between Trump and the leader of the Catholic church.

With the Prince of Wales attending the installation of the new Archbishop of Canterbury yesterday, what does his āquiet faithā mean for his future role as monarch? I spoke to @HenryRiley1 on @LBC at the weekend:

Just surfacing here briefly to make a few public service announcements for the greater good:
No, it is not Christmas, it's November.
No, it's not "Black Friday" this week. We live in the UK. (And anyway, today is Monday).
Conducting academic research and writing books when you don't have a funded university research job and project funding is really tough. If you want to support Max's interesting research and books on Chiefs of Staff (always topical, it seems!) take a look and consider donating:
