Why train like this? Using variable training stimulus gets the athlete to self organize their arm action without demanding a robotic position. Instead, exposing the arm to different forces allows it to self organize the movement patterns that work best for the athlete. The athlete will blend these different training tools into their throwing program throughout the week.

Stabilize the attractors 🦵 Check out these 2 different movements we use with our athletes: The RDL movement before the throw teaches the athlete to initiate a proximal to distal move, eliciting a co-contraction of all the muscles around the hip. This provides the athlete stability as they move down the slope of the mound. Keep in mind, once you establish the RDL, nothing moves but the lead leg!  The drop in creates a force that demands a co-contraction around the hip hinge. Similar to other related variations (drop in arm side/glove side), this drill challenges the athlete to control their pelvis and center of mass under dynamic conditions.

Applying an “anchor” or limiting degrees of freedom can be a quality tool to enhance an athletes proprioceptive feedback. BUT REMEMBER. While the constraint primes the proprioceptors, the permanent changes happen through implicit learning.

1/5 🧵 The pitching delivery is too fast to make conscious changes in the delivery in the moment. But can proprioception or “feel” help within an athletes training regimen?
