In the early 1980s doctors in Cambridge laid premature babies on lambswool, and the babies grew faster. They were the smallest patients in the hospital. 34 infants, born weighing about two and a half pounds, lying in incubators. The standard bedding was a cotton sheet. A psychologist and a paediatrician had heard that mothers in Australia and New Zealand put newborns to sleep on lambskins, and that the babies seemed more settled. So they ran a proper trial. Half the babies were nursed on cotton. Half were nursed on a pad of lambswool. Nothing else was changed. The result went into the Lancet in 1983. The babies on wool put on 22.7 grams a day. The babies on cotton put on 18.6. That is nearly a quarter more growth, in children for whom every gram is a step away from danger, from changing what they lay on. Nobody was entirely sure why. Wool holds a layer of still, warm air against the skin. It takes up moisture without feeling damp. It gives under a body where a sheet does not. Hospitals had known a version of this for a long time. For decades a patient who was bedbound was put on a sheepskin to stop the skin breaking down, and trials in Australia later confirmed that real sheepskin prevents bedsores. Then came the synthetic version. A sheet of polyester pile that could be boiled and cost a fraction as much. It looked the part. It does not do the job. A ewe grows the best thing ever found for a newborn to lie on, and a lamb is born onto it. The hospital tested that against the alternative and wool won. The alternative was cheaper, so that is what most babies get.

"Drinking milk is unnatural" is an argument made by people holding an oat latte, and it deserves a proper look. The objection is that milk was made to feed a baby cow. Correct. Now apply it to the rest of the trolley. A grain of wheat is the food supply packed for a baby wheat plant. You grind it up and call it toast. A nut is the same arrangement for a baby tree. A bean is the same for a baby bean. An egg was made for a baby chicken. Honey was made for baby bees. Almost everything you eat was put there for somebody else's offspring. Milk is simply the one that admits it. The second objection is that no other animal drinks the milk of another species. Cats do. Hedgehogs do. Dogs would, given a minute alone with the jug. Blue tits learned to open British milk bottles for the cream and taught each other the trick across the whole country. Seagulls in California have been filmed stealing milk directly from nursing elephant seals. No animal turns it down on principle. They only lack a bucket and a stool. No other animal ferments a soybean, sets it with gypsum and presses it into a block either. Nobody calls tofu a crime against nature. No other animal soaks oats in enzymes, adds rapeseed oil and a phosphate to stop it splitting, and sells it in a carton with a joke on the side. Milk comes out of a cow, who made it from grass, in a field. It is ready when it arrives. One of these drinks needed a factory, a chemist and a marketing department. The other one is being accused of being unnatural.

This is insane. A Sudanese 'asylum seeker' was ordered to leave his hotel because of his bad behaviour. So he set it on fire. If the blaze were not contained, up to 170 people could have been burnt alive. When security found him, he was sat there 'smiling at them'. His sentence? 31 months. That's the exact same sentence Lucy Connolly received after she posted on social media about setting fire to a hotel. But this Sudanese man actually did it. Yet they got the SAME SENTENCE. We will end two tier Britain. End the systematic discrimination against white people in British policing and justice. We will ensure any foreign national who commits a crime on British soil is deported.

This is just not true. As soon as I became foreign secretary I asked the security services the same question and they replied that there was no evidence of any successful interference in the 2016 referendum, by Russia or any other power. Either the security services have changed their view - which would be very odd - or Burnham is lying about what he has been told. After all Starmer was in power for two years and had access to exactly the same information. theguardian.com/technology/2…

Britain was a mutton country until roughly 1955, and then it wasn't. Not lamb. Mutton. The red meat on the ordinary table, in the ordinary house, for six hundred years. The sheep stayed alive because a living sheep earned its keep: a fleece off it every June, lambs every spring, and it did the whole job on hillside that would grow nothing else. Only when all that was finished did it become dinner. The national dishes were built on it, and most people have no idea what was ever in them. Lancashire hotpot was mutton chops and kidneys under a lid of sliced potato, sat in the bottom oven from morning until the shift came off. Welsh cawl, mutton and leek and swede in one pot, the broth drunk first out of the same bowl. Scotch broth started with a piece of neck. Boiled leg with caper sauce was good enough for a Victorian dining room and cheap enough for a two-up two-down. Shepherd's pie is called shepherd's pie because a shepherd's meat was sheep. Look what it gets made with now. By the mid-fifties the trade had worked out that a sheep killed at five months turns money over twice as fast as a sheep killed at three years. That was the argument. Cash flow. The story about lamb's delicate flavour was assembled afterwards to explain a decision already taken in an office. What it costs you is not sentimental. Years on grass lay down proper fat, and mutton fat carries the compounds the rumen makes out of pasture, which is the actual flavour. The muscle is dark because it holds more myoglobin, and myoglobin is where the haem iron lives. A working animal puts collagen through its neck and shanks, and collagen under low slow heat turns to gelatine, which is why a mutton stew sets in the pot overnight and a lamb stew sits there like soup. Lamb is a four-month-old that has grown no fleece, raised nothing, and been bred lean into the bargain. Meanwhile a hill ewe who has given you five lamb crops and five fleeces is worth a fraction of her own offspring at market, because we talked ourselves out of eating her. Where it actually is, and it is out there: Your own butcher, first. If he says he has no mutton, ask for hogget, the one to two year old, and watch his face change, because it tells him you know what you are on about. He can nearly always get one in if somebody asks him twice. Native breed farms direct. Herdwick, Shetland, Manx Loaghtan, Swaledale. Most will put a box in the post and most are delighted anybody asked. Farmers markets and farm shops in any upland county, Cumbria, the Dales, mid Wales, the Borders. Ask the stallholder about cull ewes and see what he says. And Caribbean and West African grocers, where older sheep never went out of fashion and the customers know exactly what they are buying. Get a shoulder. Low oven, an onion, a pint of water, five hours, do nothing else to it. That smell coming out of the kitchen at four o'clock is the one your great-grandmother's whole street had on a Sunday.

This is a Republican Congresswoman. If she spoke like this about Jewish Americans, she would right be regarded as a loud-and-proud Nazi. Islamophobia is spiralling out of control in the US.
Every single Muslim holding public office in America is a trojan horse, and a threat to both national security and our republic. We refuse to be silent.

As nationally critical as home produced food is to the UK, farming is being hit hard by Labour. This Government has proven explicitly that it cares nothing for farming, for farmers, for farming families, nor the countryside as a whole. Appeasement of the Parliamentary Labour Party, already restless and troublesomely emboldened, becomes a matter of pressing managerial priority for Labour. And it is to that end that farming and the countryside now sits even more squarely within Labour’s hard-Left ideological sights. Things are moving quickly now, a sign of how Labour has positioned the demise of the countryside as part of a core agenda. From pre-Election lies, to post-Election stitch up, farming is now in the process of being set up to brutally fail. The politicised anti-farming narrative now shifts toward land. Land is being linked to un-earned wealth. As this Labour Government flounders on, it gears up to come after wealth. For farmers that will mean a spiteful, and increasingly focused, targeting of land. Family farms need help. It is time for alternative politics to step up to this pressing rural challenge. But a message to farmers, also - next time around you must have the courage to choose that which stands to make all the difference. @SDPhq

This IHT policy is an idiotic act of political self harm… a free hit for the populist right
At today's press conference, @beverleyturner asked President Trump how important farmers were to him amid the backdrop of the UK changes to inheritance taxes. Thank you for backing your farmers, Mr President. We need our government to do the same and #StopTheFamilyFarmTax. Watch full clip from 1:08:35👉youtube.com/watch?v=O1jOi7Wc…

There's been 25 peaceful protests this week against illegal migration, each attended by thousands. Not a single one has been reported by the legacy media… I wonder why?

I’ve stayed quiet—until now. The truth has to come out. Bracknell Forest Council has tried to silence me for raising concerns about 300+ Afghans housed in a Bracknell hotel—using intimidation and weaponising complaints to shut down scrutiny of a government policy. 🧵 👇🏻

We are losing land at a rapid rate… and productivity has stalled on what remains… and population is growing And our food system is fragile and ‘just in time’ based increasingly on imports, in a wider world that’s now unstable and where demand is growing so exports vulnerable

If it’s true and @JDVance is planning to holiday in the Cotswolds, then I hope he knows that he and his family are incredibly welcome. Please ignore the pro-Palestine lunatics who glue themselves to the concrete. These freaks do not represent Britain. You’re all very welcome.

Folks we wake to Broken Britain; a country that has no faith in its GOVT; its policing is Broken its Criminal Justice system is in chaos where the streets are unsafe & lawless; where we have No Go areas the many promised crackdowns on crime Never happen & instead we release early dangerous & persistent offenders who plague us time & time again; We are the Rape Capitol of the world; our women don’t feel safe & neither do our elderly; we have a Knife; Shoplifting Robbery; Theft & ASB Crime Epidemics & Domestic violence is off the scale; A country who cannot protect its border & where we reward illegal Invaders with Billions of taxpayers money when Millions of UK citizens can barely pay their own bills; We house illegal Migrants in 4* hotels when we can barely house our own citizens; we Reward their illegal entry with Free everything; Hotels NHS eye tests medical treatment days out driving lessons etc etc Some of these Invaders too often Rape our women & commit crime at will & the public feel unsafe & have serious concerns about the safety of their children; I deem this contentious that the GOVT should deem this as a NATIONAL EMERGENCY & close our borders & those who continue to enter our country are Immediately arrested & detained & thereafter deported ASAP Victims of crime feel uncared for feeling no more than just a crime number as their crimes go un-investigated; A madness has descended upon us that NONE of us want or voted for; As someone who was a police officer for 31yrs & is lead law & order campaigner & a lead authority on Knife Crime (35yrs) hand on ❤️ Britain is in a state of ANARCHY & I couldn’t be more serious! There are solutions to these problems but I don’t see anyone looking for them instead we are offered froth when we need substance; Broken Britain; who is going to fix it? I can tell you that this certainly not @Keir_Starmer the most hated PM that Britain has had & @UKLabour are not the solution but have become the problem; Next May at the Local Council Elections @UKLabour need to be wiped off of the map & thereafter should be a vote of no confidence in them because as as soon as Britain gets a grip on the law & order crises in Britain the sooner we can start to effectively deal with it! Broken Britain needs Fixing & URGENTLY!
