Qantas has announced the first-ever scheduled nonstop flights between Australia and Cape Town, connecting Sydney to the South African city in just 14 hours and 25 minutes.
The historic route will launch on October 19, 2027, using a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, with three weekly flights covering approximately 11,010 kilometres.
For the first time, passengers travelling between Australia and Cape Town will be able to fly directly without connecting through Johannesburg or another international hub.
But the announcement also highlights just how dramatically aviation has changed.
When Qantas launched its first scheduled service to South Africa in 1952, the journey from Sydney to Johannesburg took approximately 66 hours, with stops in Perth, the Cocos Islands and Mauritius.
Seventy-five years later, a Qantas Dreamliner will be able to connect Sydney directly with Cape Town in less than 15 hours.
The new service will operate three times weekly, on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays, with 236 seats across business, premium economy and economy.
Cape Town will become Qantas' third South African route, joining its existing Sydney–Johannesburg and Perth–Johannesburg services.
The seasonal operation is initially scheduled to run until March 24, 2028.
From a 66-hour journey involving multiple stops to a nonstop flight across the Indian Ocean, Qantas' latest announcement is another remarkable illustration of how far long-haul aviation has come.

💺 The Emirates First Class remains, even after so many years, the most iconic cabin. B777 or A380, for years this has been the seat everyone wanted to fly. And I'm afraid to say, nothing comes close to date, not even the Game Changer?

Nedbank has completed its acquisition of a 66% stake in NCBA, a Kenyan commercial bank, in a deal worth approximately R13.9 billion.
The deal has been in the works for months, as the South African banking stalwart looks to expand to an international market.
In an announcement published on the Stock Exchange News Service (SENS), the group confirmed that all conditions for the acquisition had been met.
To complete the acquisition, Nedbank approached NCBA investors directly and offered to purchase their shares.
NCBA shareholders were able to tender up to 66% of their stake in the company to Nedbank, while excess applications could be made subject to scaling and allocation mechanics.
Ultimately, Nedbank purchased over 1.3 billion shares in the Kenyan bank, representing 79.88% of NCBA shares in issue.
