The closure of Delta Peanut in Jonesboro is devastating, and with peanut harvest here, this is an emergency for Northeast Arkansas agriculture.
We don’t know exactly what happened yet, and I’m not going to speculate.
But I know what I would be doing if I were Arkansas’s U.S. Senator tonight.
I’d be on the phone with USDA, lenders, processors, warehouses and every major peanut buyer I could reach trying to find a home for this crop and protect these farmers. I’d be working with state leaders to figure out what can be done for the 120 workers and families facing the loss of their jobs.
Farmers have crops in the field. They have operating loans to pay. They cannot wait weeks for Washington to figure out whose problem this is.
This is what representation is for.
