Observing the startups on the ground, a downturn feels close for companies founded 2 years ago. Runways are depleting; top winners get funding while the rest can't raise anymore. Q1 2027 will be the impact point. a16z laying off its talent team is the signal: startups aren't hiring. As startups freeze budgets, the broader economic ripple follows.
🦔Andreessen Horowitz laid off most of its 34 person team that helps its startups recruit talent, Axios reports. The few who are left will move into individual investing groups like growth and crypto, and the firm declined to comment. My Take I think a16z is bracing for a tougher stretch. In the past week CoreWeave’s bonds hit distress levels, Firmus pulled its IPO, and Character AI filed for bankruptcy three years after a16z led its $150 million round at a $1 billion valuation. The biggest venture firm in tech no longer paying a central team to help its companies hire means it expects those companies to need fewer people, or to have less money to pay them. Venture firms collect management fees for years no matter what, so a cut like this usually reflects what they expect next. Some of it is AI taking over recruiting and the work itself, but I think most of it is money getting harder to raise for anyone outside the biggest AI labs. I expect more firms to quietly shrink their support staff over the next few months, and the startups that make it through will be the ones that can pay for their own hiring out of revenue. #Anthropic hits a $2T IPO, but AI data centers are failing to go public: • #Firmus: Scrapped $30.6B IPO • #AirTrunk: Delayed $1.5B REIT (6% yield failed) • #PLDT: Postponed to next year Rising rates and volatile markets are flashing gloomy economic signs for the future 📊🏢

Good chart to see how the world is becoming more asset-heavy. The next capex supercycle? #PhysicalAI and #Robotics. This time though shift is reversed: In the past, we built machines (train tracks, steam engines) first, then we built systems to manage them. Now, we build the software "brain" first inside massive data centers, then robots will come. Building the brains was incredibly expensive; building the physical bodies will be historic 🤖🏗️

Global #humanoid robot shipments hit 25,000 units in H1 2026, up 432% YoY per IDC/Scout data. Chinese vendors supplied 95%+ of volume, led by #AgiBot (8,600+) and #Unitree (~5,000) as the robotics market splits by maturity. #HumanoidRobotics #Robotics

haha time has come thanks to #starlink "Fast, free in-flight Wi-Fi is turning airplane cabins into airborne offices, with passengers increasingly joining Zoom and FaceTime calls at 30,000 feet; Qatar, Emirates, and British Airways permit calls, while United bans them and lawmakers are pushing legislation to keep flights quiet." :)

Marc Andreessen (@pmarca) on founders taking psychedelics: “I was describing this phenomenon we see in Silicon Valley where these guys get under pressure and they feel anxious and somebody tells them about psychedelics. They try it and they kind of come out the other end as a changed person. And they kind of come out much more at peace, but then they also tend to like quit their companies and they move to Indonesia and become a surf instructor. They just peace out. They're just done. There's been a whole bunch of examples of this and I was complaining to @hubermanlab about this and in true Huberman kind of wise Yoda style, he's like, "Well, you know, how do you know they're not happier? Maybe that was the positive outcome. Maybe the thing that was driving them to be a great entrepreneur was a fundamental level of insecurity. They had this kind of unsatisfied, neurotic impulse, and now, they're just satisfied.” And I'm like, "Yeah, but their company, it's failing."
Ari Emanuel says @pmarca is wrong that psychedelics make founders work less hard: “That’s complete bulls**t. I had this argument with Marc.” “5-MeO-DMT, that’s the best psychedelic in the world.” “With 5-MeO, you smoke it. You’re tripping for about 30 minutes, and you realize how small we are in the world, and how meaningless in a weird way. Not in a bad way that you don’t want to work or anything, that you’re not aggressive or any of that. You just realize... you want a meaningful life.” “I’m not half-assing things. Zero. There’s still plenty of calls. I’m up at 5:00 this morning, worked out, in the office, did another podcast. I got you. I’m going to Montecito for something. I’m working my tail off.”

Important note regarding Grok @Bot: Going forward, @SpaceX will use the best back end model for any given task, including Claude Opus 5.5, MidJourney, Suno and other leading APIs. Whatever is most likely to give you the best outcome.

Can Astra be the real deal for #robotics? "On the bowl task Astra placed the block in 19 of 20 trials, against #Fable 5.1's 8 of 20 and Fable 5 in 1 of 20, in 2.5 minutes per trial to Fable 5.1's 6.8, at an estimated $0.94 per run to $2.12." openai.robocurve.org/gpt-6-a…

#Dynatrace just closed its $915M #Arize deal. The real story? Monitoring vendors want to own the AI layer, not just infrastructure. Dynatrace now sells to AI engineers and data scientists, not only SRE teams. Datadog, New Relic and Splunk must be watching the AI eval startups. #Monitoring #AIEvals

#Lambda locked in cheap, flexible debt (6.78%) to fund a large GPU purchase. The low rate signals growing lender confidence in GPU-backed financing. For 30,000+ Nvidia GPUs, they paid roughly $33,000 per GPU. A rate under 7% suggests lenders now see GPU fleets and the revenue they generate as much safer. Cheaper debt lets AI cloud providers expand faster without selling equity. #neocloud

WSJ says "A study found that only 11% of nearly 400 surveyed businesses were able to accurately forecast their spending on artificial intelligence." We are still trying to figure out how to use the tokens/models efficiently! And this is a must: "training employees on which model to use for a particular task" But why use an AI if humans will still decide which models to use :) #tokenmaxxing

#inference is a never ending theme in sv if you have the GPUS or the right relationship to buy gpus and put them into work
One of our portfolio companies just went from $2M to $27M in annualized revenue in 4 weeks with a new inference product. And they’re profitable. I’ve never seen anything like it.
